Just traded in my car for a lovely sexy black E36 323i coupe. Am as pleased as you could possibly be, but am wandering if anyone out there has any tips for things i should be looking out for on it. It has FBMWSH and has just passed a BMW inspection.

Congratulations! May you have much fun hooning about in it. Best advice is don't worry about things to look out for now - you've bought it and it's yours. Just enjoy it!

Have a look if there's a lever next to the steering wheel with some arrows on it. You may find it does something with the orange lights found on each corner of the car..

just thought I'd point it out as I don't think BMW mention it in the manual.

When you say FBMWSH, you need to make sure you have the CTR (Certificate of Road Ownership) too. This must be kept in the car at all times incase of encounters with the Police.

If you don't have it in your service manual package you need to speak to the dealership pronto.

It's not unheard of for dealers to keep hold of the CTR as there's a healthy black market in them - particularly amongst Passat drivers who aren't technically entitled..

Strange, I think Volvo have a lever like this, that is in the always on position.

Make sure the dealer removed the magnets from the front and offside of the car. BMW dealers are notable for their failure to remove them prior to delivery.
If left in situ, they can cause the car to become attracted to the bumper of the car in front and to metal barriers, causing the car to veer directly to the outside lane when joining a motorway.

Aren't they extra cost options on a BMW, like the transparent side windows for use when pulling out onto roundabouts?

A common fault to watch for on the E36 is a failing fog light switch. It should be fixed in the "ON" position. If you try and switch them off but cant, dont worry, they are all like that!

Edited to say I'm only jealous!

You’ll just love the way the 323 coupe’ attracts admiring glances and waves from other road users. This is normally acknowledged by them as a subtle waving action, a bit like someone shaking some coffee beans in their palm.

Good luck mate and ignore all the jealous barstewards who wish they had a new BMW!

Paul.

Sorry for quoting myself but I think this predated the later publication by Sniffpetrol.. the concept-thieving wretches..

I've just got rid of my E36, and didn't drive like a tw@t, but I can see why the average BM driver does, the cars are invincible!

1st accident, 18 wheeler caught the back quarter of my car as motorway lanes merged (his fault). Damage him, dented bumper. Damage me, slight dent in rear panel. Remeber this was a big truck, would have demolished another car.

2nd accident, on a roundabout, car pulls out of junction in front of me, I brake, car behind doesn't. Damage him, compleatly wrote off his Polo-with-a-boot, it looked like he hit a streetlamp at 30mph. Damage me, couldn't even see where he's hit (on closer inspection, tiny gouge in rear bumber, size of half a small pea)

Anyway, to sum things up, BMW's drive like they rule the road, because they can. I for one will be staying well clear of BMW's in my new car!!

P.S. I'm sure all BM drivers here are calm and courtious, the just the rest of them

Hmm, maybe I should get one of those. Are the opaque rear window and the automatic middle lane steering now standard too?

I thought they'd dropped LSD in favour of E's on the later models

Congrats and enjoy the car. I had an e36 318 many moons ago and I never had one problem with it other than it started me off down a road of buying bigger engined BMWs. Since that one, I've had a 523, a 540 and am now waiting for an M3

They are excellent cars in their class, with build quality, driveability, reliability and style that is only really equalled or beaten by cars that cost quite a bit more IMHO.

Contrary to popular opinion, not all BMW drivers drive like total A$$munchers - but there do seem to be a fair few.

There are dedicated BMW forums out there if you find the response from this one a little less than helpful
