Does anyone else have this problem? Tighten bolts, then after about 600-700 miles, drops of oil appear on the garage floor, and all the bolts are loose again and the gasket is weeping. Is there a fix? Any advice appreciated. (Its a 98 450 with about 24k miles).

Are you using shakeproof washers? If so, try some breakable threadlock too.

GreenV8S - just plain washers AFAIK. I have owned 3 V8 Range Rovers, all without shakeproof washers on the sump bolts and have never seen this before. But if thats what it takes...

if the sump gasket is a poor quality item then it may keep compressing when you nip bolts up,which may explain bolts coming loose,as gasket compreses bolts no longer under tension hence come loose. try some blue thread lock first though, not the hard setting red stuff.

I have heard that the way the sump bolt lies it can get caught and un-do on speed bumps.

Doesn't sound good...

I had a V8 SD1 years ago that used to do this. I went down the loctite route and that seemed to cure it. Can't remember whether it had shakeproofs on it though. Hope this helps.

I think we're getting confused here, I think that the OP is referring to the bolts which hold the sump onto the engine. The sump plug is the one that can work loose (via speed bumps) and is addressed with Steve Heath's mod as shown in the ChimPages link above.
