Fuel Filter position

My 400SE has just passed its MOT, but there was an advisory note that the fuel filter was very rusty. This would seem to explain some erratic running I am getting when I hit bumps. Sometimes there is a drop in power as though the fuel has been shut off and it only rectifies itself when the back end goes over another bump when full power is restored. So I decided to get another fuel filter. I rang Richard at RT Racing but he says there are two types of filter and I need to take it off the car before he can decide which one I need. So here are my questions. Can someone tell me where the fuel filter is on the car (I know its at the back somewhere but I don't know where)and what are the differences between the two types. Is it possible to tell the difference without taking it off the car? I use the car daily so I don't want to remove it unless I absolutely have to. TIA.

Filter is located in the fuel line after the pump (high pressure), and mounted on the same plate to the chassis. When I took mine to a supplier they matched it to a fuel injected VW Golf thingy (propably some standard bosch item), but I have a 350i not 400. Sorry can't help on what the other would be like.

While you are at it, to keep the fuel pump alive for a long time, it is advised to put also a filter before (low pressure) the fuel pump to catch any debri coming from the tanks.
In general I would not consider external rust to be able to indicate problems with your fuel filter. Normally it is always full of petrol, and corrosion would show petrol leaking out of it (especially as it is in the high pressure part of the fuel system).

Having hickups while driving can also be caused by some soldering bits in the swirlpot blocking the flow. And could explain that it happens after a speed hump/b-roads. The swirlpot often connects to the two tanks (mine doesn't), and it is located before the fuel pump.

Its bolted to a plate along with the fuel pump near the drivers side rear wheel.

You should be able to see it if you poke your head under the wheel arch.

Undo one side, undo the other watch for the petrol pissing out everyplace and reconnect up the new one watching the way the arrow points for the flow and re-bolt the new one on.

Also check the state of the pipes!
