MIL Light

Can I ask how everyones MIL light works?

Mine seems to come on with ignition with a high pitched whine, and dosen't go off until the engine starts. Never comes on with the engine running.

Handbook says its only meant to come on for two seconds with ignition and then go off before the car is started. Mine doesn't do this.

I initially thought it might be a logged fault, but if so the MIL is meant to stay on even when the engine is running and I don't have any faults logged in the car.

Anyone care to let me know what their MIL does?

And mine!!! Oh and it stays on for a couple of days if I wash the car for more than five minutes - I must find all those leaks one day!!!

so it sounds like the handbook is wrong . Thank you PH collective. Been searching a while through the car circuitry there before I thought to question the handbook.

Interestingly my shift light had been cut rather than connected too. Not that I'd ever get to test that but nice to know its working now.

Mine does that too.

Also had the Ice warning light flash from red to green to yellow en route to lemans in the pouring rain. Very odd, assume that one was down to water though.

My MIL flashes once and the indicator beep, beeps once! If you have logged faults then periodically this occurs - it's not on constantly. How periodic I don't know.
I think my battery voltage is right on edge and if it dips below 11.8V - which it has done a couple of times now - a fault is logged. This then causes the MIL flash and beep. It just doesn't seem that periodic to me. More like random! If the faults are cleared, it goes away.

In other words yours is closer to what is suggested by the handbook. Okay great shall we start a poll of one beep and continuous beep, and see if there's an age relationship. I'll start

1996 4.2 No beep at all, just the MIL light on until the engine is turning over !!!

There's no beep or potentiometer settings on the indicators either.... it's very quiet in there.... till the black button is pushed

Same as yours, light on, continuous beep until started. '97 4.2

Same here just till engine is turning over (99 s6) . I also started the car the stopped straight away, it stayed on longer after that but only a few seconds.
