Rumbling and knocking
Discussion
Would a worn gearbox mount give me a rumbling noise whilst gently accelerating? also the propshaft has a hollow tapping sound to it, maybe my UJ`s are shot. Where is the gearbox mount and is it easy to check? ooh forgot to mention, it`s on an S2, thanks in advance for any advice.

hard to say without hearing the noise - but a worn mounting wouldn't be tapping - you'd feel it thump on taking up the drive etc.
The symptoms you describe sound more like u/j or driveshaft CV joints - only way to check is get under and twist each joint in both hands (one hand each side of each joint) and feel for any play.

Hi Steve,
I had a similar sound on my first S2 and it turned out to be the prop UJ's.

Hi Steve
I'd work through the whole drivetrain - engine/gearbox/diff mountings then propshaft UJ's and CV joints. If it's more noticeable on torque reversal i.e. accelerating/decelerating then probably propshaft UJ's. Or is it speed related? A good poke around should find the problem. It's quite easy to establish wear/play in the UJ's/CV joints. Try to fit the re-greasable UJ's if it is the prop and get it checked/re-balanced.
Good luck!
