Hi

Took the Chim out for a quick run on the weekend and noticed the oil pressure gauge needle had shot over to the right indicating 100 PSI ! It was a very hot day and the temp gauge was reading 95+ so my first thoughts were that sender a wire was getting hot. Turned the engine over again tonight and the fault was replicated from cold.

I plan to take the car away on the weekend and would really appreciate any advice on possible cause / solution and whether I should use the car.

Cheers

Most likely a loose connection on the pressure sensor.

Try giving the spade connector a good squeeze...

OK

I've checked the wiring and spade connector and whilst it is loose it apears to be the male side (the bit attached to the sensor) of the connection that is the problem. Wiggling this with the ignition on (engine off) caused the reading to drop from 100 to '0'.

I presume that the sensor needs replacing but would be really grateful for some advice as I'm not that techy and the bible stops at 'checking the wiring' !.

Does the sump need to be drained before the sensor can be changed ?

Cheers

Its around £50-£60 for a new sender from my recollection..
Its not uncommon as a) They get jolly hot and b) for some bizarre reason TVR seemed to be rather stingy with the length of wire to the sender on some so the wire was often under tension when the engine moved under acceleration.

Atleast you will know not to panic if the guage does something bizarre again.

Mine would start high pressure and as soon as i accelerated the pressure would drop below 0. caused a moment the first time i saw it.. Turned out the wire to the sender was too short and kept breaking connection.

Thanks for all your help chaps.

One fully functioning sender now fitted and peace of mind reinstated !

Just for the record, the job took 45 mins including jacking and siting axle stands.

Did you need to drain the sump?

No, I replaced the oil pressure sender. £54 for the part and 45 mins to fit.

you really should not use ptfe tape, horrible things occur if this gets into the oil filter, use a small amount of threadlock instead.
