Fuel filter

Done a few searches in the forum for the correct part number for a new fuel filter but there seems to be more than one type. Does anyone know the correct filter for a 1988 350i?

On the subject of filters, can anyone reccommend a prefilter to stop crap getting into the pump?

Presumably they need to be designed for high volume low pressure?
Are those "glass" bowl ones you see on some classics any good? You know, the ones that look like the compressed air water filters.
They're obviously designed for carbs so I don't know if they flow enough.
If they are any good then they'll show you when craps moving through.

Thanks I'll take a look.
The score is I've found that the lack of fuel to the engine in the racer has been due to crap getting in the fuel pump and blocking the inlet of the pump. Like you say I basically want a low pressure high volume filter to remove any large bits of crap getting to the pump, then let the high pressure filter look after the fine detritus later on.

The penny finally dropped about a fortnight ago when i figured I couldn't be that unlucky with regulators, then realised the regulator was fine cos it held the pressure when the engine wasn't running, but the flow wasn't sufficient to feed the system at pressure with a running engine.

Fitted one of these www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?cls=MSPORT&pcode=FSEBULLA01 between the tanks and the fuel pump. Not running the same engine and fuel pump as you but I suspect it's using a similar amount of fuel.
