Hi

I'm looking to do a bit of club level racing next year, possibly the 750MC stockhatch. One of the many things i'm going to need to purchase is a complete set of racewear. I've had a look on ebay to try and keep the costs down abit but am unsure of what standards are current. And having raced karts last year am well awear that people are happy to sell useless out of date stuff on ebay.

Think i've found a set of overalls at a reasonable price. on the collar it says standard 8856-2000 and year of manufacture 2002. does anyone know if these are still approved of racing? Also do the approvals last a certian number of years from the manufactured date?

Thanks in advance

it should say in the blue book what standards are current, i cant remember off the top of my head what they are but race suits can be had new for around £150 so i shouldnt bother with eBay. you want to know the suit you are buying is the real deal so to speak, the number of con merchants on ebay doubles daily....

try places like demon tweeks etc as their range and stock is good, then try places like RG Racewear and peter lloyd rallying who are generally a bit cheaper.

the 2000 standard is the latest fia standard, if your running in national racing the 1986 standard is still fine.. not sure when things will be updated though. If we'd have gone to spa this season I'd have needed a 2000 spec suit.

I race in 750mc Stock Hatch, this being my 4th season! With regards to race wear buy the BEST you can afford, we went for 3 layer nomex OMP race suit and nomex under wear/socks/balaclava as well as good gloves and OMP boots (all fire proof). The ones in the Demon Tweeks Catalogue will show what is FIA compliant, but if in any doubts phone them up and ask, they know loads about racing and race wear as thats what they do everyday! Also make sure you get a good helmet, this is your life so spend as much as you can on it! We got the Arai GP-5K for about £500 if i remember correctly. This helmet was recommended by Silverstone after I passed my ARDS. Hope this helps.

I don't know if its the same, But as a Marshal I have Nomex undies and Proban orange overalls, If your buying second hand and they are Proban it only has a limited life due to the retardant being a chemical treatment that gets washed out, With Nomex it is the way it's made thus has a much longer care free life.

Oh, I hear Steel if fire proof,

I bought a new 3 layer nomex suit from AWS racewear in Ashford (Kent) they sell a good range of suits off the shelf or will make you one to fit. They also do the underwear.
Check out their website www.advanced-wear.co.uk
For crash helmets, make sure you buy either BS6658-85 Type A or Snell 2000 approved.
ACU Gold motorcycle helmets will not pass scuitineering.
Demon Tweeks will sell you everything you need but I find their prices a little high.
If you do race next year, join their Pole Position club and you will get 10% discount on most items in their catalogue.

Who said don't bother with eBay?

If you can spare a little more than £150 you can get a decent suit, after all it is a very important piece of clothing!

I bought a Sparco Xlite 270 which retails in Tweeks for £705 + delivery for the princely sum of £225, it was brand new and had all the tags - it was the 2006 spec as well.

Try Jays Racewear - cheaper and much better quality than the Sparco stocked by GPR and everyone else.

As far as I know, Proban is no longer acceptable for race suits.
