What utter cock rot.

Enough of this 993 vs 996 nonsense.

It's pointless, boring and tiresome.

Buy a 996 with a warranty (993s are now all too old for this...) and enjoy it.

That is all.

Honest John... yeah, he honestly knows nothing

I often put a cursery glance at his column and it never ceases to amaze me how he debunks the rest of the automotive world's opinion for his own stance...

Worse than that, he was on one of the news programmes a few montsh ago re the 4x4 debate, and up against one of the anti-4x4 brigade. He made a complete arse of it and lost all the arguments put forward by the other guy. Complete waste of space.

Lucky they changed the engine so much in the 997...

So I've made a big mistake following Honest John's advice then? I'm so gullible. I saw he had the name Honest and just took that at face value.

He recomends the Porsche 993 and the Citroen Berlingo. So I bought both.

What can I do now? Is he liable for my stupidity, and can you recomend a no-win-no-fee lawyer to secure compensation? Preferably enough dosh to correct my error by buying a 996.

Well, you know what they say, "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing".

Considering that the 997 has been available for about 15 seconds, we don't know if the RMS issue etc. has been resolved!

Maybe he deep down wants a 996 and is doing his bit to try and lower the residuals?

We know for a fact the RMS issue has not been resolved in the 997.

RMS issue still exists. Fact per my OPC tech (of 20+ yrs standing).

The basic flaw still exists.

yeah I saw that, it never ceases to amaze me.

Someone writes in..... "I'd like a car for 30k, considering BMW 535, audi A6 or merc E class, is there anything else I should consider ?"

"Yes, look at the Honda Legend/Renault Safrane/Peugeot 607080909 or whatever"

he never seems to factor in the depreciation these poor fu**ers are going to face.

Actually, his website is excellent on the car by car breakdown. Loads of real world examples of common faults and stuff to look for.

This "buy a warranty" thing is madness- if you plan to keep an older 996 for a while then you will not be able to get cover and there is no guarantee that Porsche will keep offereing it. I reckon its best to find a car with the engine blown, ship it to someone like Hartech or Autofarm and have it fixed properly or buget for a rebuit engine (which is going to hit residuals). The prospect of my 996 engine going bang on a cold windy night 300 miles from home is not an attractive one-FIX THE FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEM instead of insuring against it.

What are these engine issues I keep reading about on here with regards the 996?

A RMS leak won't break the engine, so what is it?

From www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=255089&f=48&h=0

The potential & actual results of an RMS failure:-

Oil spots on your garage floor.

In theory the clutch could be contaminated with dripping oil although in practise there are no (or very, very, very few) reported cases of this ever happening..

There are no other problems associated with having a failing RMS, it has never, repeat never caused engine failure.

I personally will be taking an effigy of a 996 engine to Goodwood, and burning it whilst danicng naked around it, screaming the mantra RMS....RMS......RMS......

Lord March specifically asked me to do it.
