Can anyone recommend any laptops which are super duper micro small, running XP. ie 9 inch screen, the size of an A5 pad-ish, several steps down in size from the regular stock.

Fujitsu life books used to be quite good.
Had mine for years, touch screen too which is quite handy when there that small.
Actually had a decent battery life too.

Not sure if they still make them.

Use HP NC4000 series at work, not as small but seem quite tough.

Fujitsu-Siemens (declared interest) Q Series and the dinky little Sony Vaios are about as small as you get with a proper keyboard. Both around the 12" mark, so fairly usable on a day to day basis.

I'm currently debating my sanity and thinking of getting a UMPC, which are teensy tablets with no keyboard/mouse etc, but running full Windows rather than WM5. Smasung Q1 is currently favourite, but may wait for the flash based version rather than HDD

i believe that JVC do a rather good one, strangely enough. The JVC Mobile Mini Note PC MP-XV841 i believe from a quick google. I know of a few people that have these and they love it as an "in the field" laptop (or in one case, handbag computer)

Otherwise, hate to say it but try Sony Stable, they seem to do some nifty ones. (personal bad experiances with Sony so not my first choice)
