The guys in the VW forum are blanking me, so on the off chance:

Guys I am looking for a bit of advice, wifes car is up for renewal. As the name goes I have a 911 so I need something practical, but not to big & as she is a 80's girl she is hung up on the BMW/ect badge thing, so I was thinking a A3 sportsback S-line 2.0TDI.

Does anyone have one? if so what do you think of it, any suggested extras that are must?

And yes I have tried to get her in a A4 but "it's to big".

Sorry to bore you with normal car talk but after TonyLondon RIP, we all need to rest up a bit.

Personally, I find that Audi has replaced BMW in the 'questionable marque' stakes.
Equally, I can't understand the Golf 'thang'.

I'd be more than happy with a Focus as a second car. Great drive, practical, cheap, best in class.

One of my cars is a diesel audi a2 (brilliant, practical small car. 65mpg and so light that it's actually quite punchy around town) but i've also driven a couple of a3 diesel sportbacks. very well built, especialy inside, but not particularly exciting to drive. externally the a3 s-line also lacks the side skirts of the a4.

Another problem is that the bmw diesels beat them hands down on performance and mpg.

The only golf i'd even consider would be the gti. is that an option because you don't hear a bad word said about them and the mpg is actually pretty good?

I love my GTI. The first thing I thought when I sat down in it was 'if Porsche made hatchbacks' (and they probably will soon). It's grown-up, well-built, but still really fun. And I drove an R32 at the weekend. Even better.

Mrs Weasel has a Mini Cooper S and she loves it. Unfortunately it may have to go at the end of the year due to the impending arrival of Weasel jnr

I've got a three door 2.0 TDi Golf.

25k miles so far, although only had it about 10 months!

Goes well, quite well equiped and just under 50mpg.

Optional heated seats are excellent. (Clearly not at the moment!!)

Only complaints are: Wind noise from three door cofiguration. TADTS, but very annoying. I don't think it's a problem on the 5 door & hatchback requires a heck of a shove to close until it's well worn in.

Other than that, pretty good, and much better spec'd than a similar Audi.

Had same dilema. Just couldn't bring myself to have a Ford when other marques were available!

17" wheels do look much better, as it's really quite a 'chunky' car.

As per Weasel - I was going to suggest the Mini.

Great little car and will hold it's money extremely well (and it's a BMW I suppose!)
