Canon remote cable release = mini headphone jack?

Right then, I have a remote cable release for my camera attached to a 70cm (ish) cable which is fine for most tripod work but I'm after a setup I can pictures of birds with. This would involve an extension to the cable release, hardly a piece of technological wizardry I thought, but WarehouseExpress have them at £42!!

Being the cheapskate that I am I'm after a cheaper alternative.

Now, to me the plug looks suspiciously like the mini headphone jack (it's definetly not the 3.5mm one) so has anyone tried getting a headphone extension cable and using that instead?
