where's the speed sensor thingy?

got a slight problem with the engine in my '91 Griff wanting to die at every roundabout/traffic light/stop situation...and having cleaned the stepper motor (actually made it slightly worse?) I'm wondering if it's the speed sensor? I tried putting into neutral while doing 20-30mph and the revs just die to zero - is that a good sign of no speed sensor signal? do they fail or will it more likely be a bad connection? where is the little devil? somewhere oily and inaccessible no-doubt....

I think I am right in saying that if the speed sensor has failed then the speedo won't work

oohh ..well speedo is working ok. (my diff is a cerbera one and I seem to remember seeing a 'trigger ring' for want of a better description, on one side when it was being rebuilt. would the finger of blame point back at the stepper motor then? my only other idea is a bad connection at the ECU - the wiring arrangement under the passneger kick panel is simply a mess (comes as standard?) so I wouldn't be surprised if the fault lies somewhere in that black hole..

I would start by hiring the ECU fault code reader that somebody lends out in the classified ads. It could be so many things that £10 alone could save you a lot of time and money.

No it's a precat Grifff.... LT77 box.... speedo sensor is on the gearbox. Page 247 in the bible.
