Road outside my house when I got up this morning, notice all the lumpy tarmac? Well it was smooth the night before but thanks to a blocked culvert water flowed down the road and now we have a version of the grand canyon:

A sure sign that the relationship between God and the Presbyterians had become strained in recent months:

Water splash added to make driving more interesting for those living out their WRC dreams (Notice the “manhole cover” water feature to the left?):

Having some fun in the car:

You're a Civi', you should be having a go at the local council about their crap roads :-D

If you look at the canyon pic, it seems like the actual tarmac is like a thin bit of butter scrapped over bread!

Could be a good time to buy that 4wd...

Most of them look like that, tarseal is cheaper than asphalt in the short term (my experience of local councils is that they rarely have much vision). If they would have just kept the culvert clear of crap it would have saved taxpayers a load of money re-laying road (it was actually locals who sorted it out as far as getting the thing unblocked and flowing again).

I was in a RAV as it happens (better ground clearance so you don’t end up with wet feet).

What worries me is that there is more rain coming in tonight and everything is water logged already so I think we can expect some major damage. Hopefully they can get some civil defence/army boys out to the rural areas to help the farmers, if they have any sense they would be setting up already in preparation.

Actually a jetboat would be handy, they work in about 6 inches of water and can cover some ground quickly.

Well if that's true for your local Council they're complete idiots.

- Since the early 90's they have been doing condition / performance RAMM surveys of all their pavements and other roading assets.
- Since 1997 they've had to produce Asset Management Plans with a minimum of a 10 year forward renewal programme
- Since 1998 they've had to fund the renewals whether they actually do the work or not so nothing is really saved by deferring the work
- All Councils have access to a modeling program 'DTiMS' to optimise their renewals
- If they do all this diligently then TransFund NZ will provide a huge subsidy (probably 60 - 70% for your district) saving the ratepayers from paying the whole cost
