Been zapped twice in the past month - the first one was a fair cop guv, but the second NIP was 82 in a 70 (both unmarked camera vans).

I need a good radar detector at a decent price - what are your experiences of various brands?

I'm surprised at you Ben "Driving Miss Daisy" Heyman

On a serious note, really sorry to hear that.

As Pete from Big Brother would say "W@nkers!"

As I've said before: If the police are going to take such a blatant revenue driven approach to speeding instead of safety then penalty points should be reduced to 1 (if you are you are say under 20% plus 3 over the limit) and the fine should be £10 per MPH over the limit.

If you look at the tolerance they normally allow of 10% + 2mph, I was three over that....

Many times I have said it - Origin b2 is superb. It is the right size, looks great installed and is subtle. It delivers the right information (current speed, speed limit, distance to camera and type of trap) It has never failed to alert me to a fixed trap.

Couple this to a laser garage door opener and you have a decent set up. Dont buy the origin radar detector unless you want to know details of every traffic light in the country.

Presumably it was your car that was zapped rather than you. Can you be certain who was driving at the time? Legal advice costs more than £60 but doesn't incur points.

Looks like this could do the trick - plugs into my Snooper and should pick up laser type guns - does anyone have any experience of this set up?

Theres a few things to consider when trying to detect laser. See:

Thanks Simon, still think it will help.

Does anyone have experience of mounting laser detectors near the front number plate? A how to guide like janitors ICE install would be great.

I think you mean "Garage Door Openers". Writing a "how-to" could perhaps be seen as assisting someone who intends to pervert the course of justice. Tread carefully.

Perverting the course of justice? I call it aiding the Safety Camera Partnership by giving myself forewarning of their cheap, money making motorist hating schemes.

I'm tempted to drive up to one of their sites and get medieval on them, Michael Douglas "Falling Down" stylee.....

So, where is the best place to put my garage door opener then?

You can also get a parking sensor... www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/laserpropark.htm

But be careful, there is a case of someone having to go to court following 'interference' on more than one occassion with the laser reading of the police speed trap. Whatever you add to your car must be for a legit reason - garage door opener or otherwise

I'm talking about a detector not a jammer - I thought that they were legal?

Not for much longer, IIRC.

Some confusion here perhaps.

Detectors: These pick up the output from the speed recording devices and issue a audible warning. They are legal at present, but will not be after the new bill passes into law.

Locators: GPS-based devices which use an internal data-base of cash-camera sites against a mapping system. They provide audio/visual warning and so long as you keep the data-base up to date they are very effective. These are, and will continue to be, entirely legal as they passively use only information already in the public domain.

Laser Jammers: Sometimes called 'garage door openers', they detect the incoming hostile laser signal, amplify if by returning it at a higher signal than the original output, thus giving an error code to the operator. This could be obstruction of a police officer (or a civilian?) or, in a serious case, perversion of the course of justice. To prove the latter it would probably be necessary to have evidence that the speed limit was being broken when the laser gun was jammed, otherwise it's only possible obstruction. However, the new bill will make them illegal and the penalty will be defined by the new bill - probably a big fine and 6 points.

There is another category:

Distance sensors (like the pro park system). These very useful devices prevent you from bumping into things when parking, and as such are - I assume - constantly active. Any interference produced by these is, well, accidental.

IIRC laser detectors are pointless - By the time your detector sees the laser youve already been had. And thats a big if assuming the operator points his laser near/at your detector.

I have TomTom with speedcamera database. Works really well unless you ignore the warning of a mobile camera site coming up (cause youve been past hundreds of times and theres never a van there) then get stuffed as happened to me last week NIP arrived today grrrr

Having said that the van was particularly well hidden so even if I had noted the warning and had a careful look not likely I would have seen the van until way too late.

Ah well

if it picks up laser it's usually too late. Only takes 0.3 of a seconds to get yah.

I have a BEL 980 and the X band can be turned off to ignore temp traffic lites

..but you would have had 85+ (perhaps even as much as 90) showing on the speedo.
