After having my 4.5 come to a grinding halt at a petrol station (why do they always break down in front of loads of people?) due to having a flat battery,I got it home and decided that it must be the alternator as it wasn't charging, after taking half the top of the engine to pieces to find the alternator I decided to stop when I thought I would need to take the inlet manifolds off,I rang Andy a APM in Bordon and he told me that there is a fuseable link in the main alternator to battery lead which is tucked down behind the coils in a black plastic box.
This had corroded and broken,I repalced it and coverd it in Vasalene and I couldn't believe the difference in the running especially when cold,it used to cut out and you had to keep the revs up untill it had got warm, now it still complains on a light throttle at low speed but it is better.
I can only think that there was a high resistance through the old one,who knows? anyway its better.
Hope this helps one of you out, now, tell me about cat out pipes and sports exhausts, any pointers please......

Cheers.
Pete.

Nice one! The charging fuse comes up on here about every month or so - the answer is clearly to have it replaced every 6k service!

Mine had odd behaviour after the fuse had cracked once, but it only finally died when a marshal waved me to come out on to the track... oh the humiliation with about 10 cars stuck behind me

Pete

Try using Shell Optimax if you're not already using it. Definately seems to make these engines run smoooooother.

You can replace the Cats with pipes, fit sport exhausts or both. I've heard a decatted 4.5 with sports exhaust, Jeez was that LOUD.

Pipes are cheaper than new exhausts. If you decat, you'll need to get them refitted every MOT time. Sports exhausts should pass without problem. The best performance seems to be obtained by decatting and keeping the standard rear boxes. You pays yer money....

Not had my 4.2 long, but the cats are not where they should be.

On a standard box it is as quiet or as loud as you want. Light throttle it sounds ordinary (in TVR terms), but as you open it up...

The pops & bangs on overrun are the best though. I can't comment on performance as I bought the car with the Cats removed. But whatever, its bloody quick.

Have fun.

Nick.
