Occasional nasty crunching sound when trying to start

My Cerb has now made an nasty metal-on-metal noise twice whilst trying to start it.
Both times the car has been parked outside my office on a slight incline with the nose pointing uphill.
It just sounds like the starter turning, but not engaging properly. On both occasions it has started fine on the second push of the button.
Is my starter about to die, or does this happen to other people regularly???

Sorry to say but it sounds like mine did when it died on me... yes i would put it down as the starter motor going. Dont do what i did just let it go on for to long as in the end i needed a low loader and a new back tyre.
Excuse my ignorance, but how did the starter affect the rear tyre?

I had to move the car up a slight hill backwards and the only way to move the car was by tow rope. As we began to pull it backwards and with nearly full lock on it slipped and pulled the car sideways slightly, the end result it split the rear tyre. The moral of the story; when you know it’s going to go get it sorted ASAP before it courses more hassle.

The car is always started with the clutch depressed.......
He means the starter motor clutch - it has a gearing mechanism that catches and engages in order to turn the engine over. The gear/clutch starts to slip due to wear and this is the metal against metal noise you are talking about. When it eventually bites the gearing kicks in and turns the engine over.

From my engineering veiw point it's not the clutch going but the pinion spinning against teh flywheel due to not engaging correctly.
I don't know if they have any chamfers on the teeth and this can cause engagement problems.
If you find it does it try engaging a gear or two with the engine off ro attempt to move the flywheel a little. I've found this helps.
