Problems starting, now can't unlock ... please help.

Ladies and Gents,
After a long period with nothing wrong, a few things have happened over the last couple of weeks. I've tried to search the forums but can't find anything on the latest problem (unlocking) but thought i'll give you the whole picture. Sorry if long story and apologies for my non technical language!
Firstly it wouldn't start, the engine would turn over but not fire. The AA eventually said it was a faulty fuel pump relay which he took out, cleaned the connections and re-fitted. Started 1st time, drove all weekend no problems.
I bought a new relay but didn't fit it until the following weekend when it did the same thing except it would cough a little. Tried the new relay but still wouldn't start with the old or new relay. Eventually, for no reason that i can tell, it started. Drove off but, with no regularity, the revs would drop and stall when the clutch is pressed while changing gear or at traffic lights. Got the car home and have spoken to a garage who told me that there are 2 fuel pump relays and to replace the other as well.
Last night i tried to unlock the car (Meta alarm fitted) to get the old relay and nothing happened. Tried both key fobs but absolutely nothing.
First thing i'll try is to replace the battery in one of the fobs but any help and advice on either problem is really appreciated.

I assume the alarm is involved in opening the doors and imobilising the fuel pump, maybe there's something wrong with it? The multi-way plug between the ignition switch and the main loom is a notorious weak spot and could be giving an intermittant problem, this would reset the alarm amongst other things, so worth checking if only to rule it out.

Is the multi-way ignition switch the manual immobiliser thing on the side of the steering column? If not how do i re-set the alarm and immobiliser?

A good starting point is to test the alarm fob. If you have a local radio ham nearby take your key along and ask him to see if he can hear it. It will be on 433.XXX Mhz. You need to tune around as the exact frequency varies. I Guess the receiver is fairly board band as my two keys are quite different but both work . Possibly that explains why the receiver is so deaf. The two keys for my Beemer are on exactly the same frequency.
Well if you get really stuck and suspect the alarm I'd recommend a chap who only yesterday reset my whole cars alarm system and provided 2 new fobs + immob keys. If you need his number feel free to email me via my profile, he's based in Watford.
