I know you can fit cans to most models to improve the way they sound, but started thinking which bikes are designed by the manufacturer to sound good without mods. I may have to do the predictable micron mod, but curious if stock bikes can sound good. Think TVR Griffith bike wise.

I have a history of putting fruity exhausts on my cars - the challenge exhaust on the Ferrari was a personal favourite. However, having a tired Fazer I am looking to upgrade the bike and would like something commutable, but with a note that will keep me smiling each day. Currently monsters seem to fit the bill, but they aren't actually such a good bike. Does anyone out there have a Jap bike with a good sound or recommend a particular model?

Any large V-twin but the Italians do seem to be better at getting the ‘off the shelf’ sound better than the Japs.

Although I rode a Tropy 900 that sounded like a diesel at idle.

Italian V-twins sound best with Ducati pipping Aprilia in the sound IMO

i dont think that Ducatis with stock cans sound very good, thier restricted exhaust note fails to drown out that dry clutch noise but with termis on thats another matter.

GSXR probably a bit extreme for someone with my experience. How about an SV650S - that's a jap v-twin I believe?

We're possibly straying from the 'stock can' point to this thread but I think your spot on with the Ducati 916/996/998 with or without dry clutch noise

...sorry I got carried away...Stock kawasaki superbikes ..ZX6/7/9/12...have always had a lovely intake charged roar that you can hear because it`s right under your chest..

...and stock piped dukes have a lovely resonance through the intake ...

IMO stock ducati's sound a bit naff.

Termi's should be a legal requirement.

Buell XB12R

Best of all, you feel the noise as it's sooooo good!

This isn't stock, but I like to show it off. (My ex Buell XB9R with XB Race Kit): http://video.google.com/videoplay?doc

I have to say my ZX636R B1H has a fantastic induction snort. Even the noise coming from the rear is half decent with a standard can. You can't beat a thumping V-twin for sound in my eyes though

Just an addon....I'll 2nd you with the monster being a knaff bike. I was totally let down after I rode my friends 650. It had 0 punch and felt more like my old Suzuki RG125!!! Totally rubbish and a complete let down
