Splitting an internet connection...

Hello all,

If I have a router that has one of its cables run into a different room, can I then split that connection again providing wired internet to several other machines???

Would I need to get a switch/hub perhaps???

A little hub will do the trick. That, or run 2 wires to the original.

I have been offered a 5 port switch for nothing, would that be able to do it too or can I only use a hub?

Yes, (either - hub being much cheaper, of course).
