Hi, new to pistonheads, first post ...

Am about to buy an F355, have looked at a few so far. BTW - the info and informal buyer's guides you guys have posted over the years have been invaluable, and I've spent a few weeks getting familiar with all the technical details, engine management versions, common faults etc. etc., and now I'm actually viewing cars!

So here's my question ... I'm seeing a car tomorrow morning, it looks great full history etc., and it has a great sounding Tubi sports exhaust. Getting a quote from
from my insurers they said the quote was based on the non-standard exhaust 'not affecting perfomance' i.e. for cosmetic (and aural) enhancement only. But I've seen various claims that the Tubi adds anything up to 40bhp (although that sounds a bit much to me).

Bottom line - do I need to declare any performance enhancement to my insurer? Or is it the done thing to just say it's cosmetic?

Responses appreciated ... ADE.,

you deffo need to declare the tubi. when they ask if the exhaust boosts performance say you don't know. There's no way it adds 40 bhp and it's very debatable if it adds anything at all.most insurers dont weight premium because of sports exhaust but always declare you have one.

You could always ask scuderia systems to verify the performance gains if anything

Follow Tony's advice and say you do not know - it's the truth.

There's no way it gives 40bhp though, and the only way to tell is to dyno it before and after. Every engine's different, so manufacturer claims are nigh on always rubbish.

Thanks guys - on the button. I told her it had a sports exhaust, she asked if it enhanced performance, I said I didn't know, she was happy.

Cheers, ADE.,

Just make sure it's actually mentioned on the paperwork and not just a "we have it on our records Sir..". I suppose the exhaust might add 10hp - highly unlikely to take it over the Ferrari claimed power output so no problem.

Edited to add: Good luck with the viewing!

I'd be more surprised if it took it up to that level, let alone over it
