Most of the time the temperature gauge in my wife's Paul Smith mpi works fine, showing normal temperatures, with the cooling fan cycling on and off when in traffic etc. However just recently the gauge went into the red, without the fan kicking in. I stopped and looked under the bonnet, expecting to see no coolant and a very hot engine but all was fine. I drove on and the gauge fell back to normal, only to rise again a few miles later, again without the fan coming on. It now does this quite regularly! I assume this must be a problem with the gauge and not the sensor or thermostat because the ecu is responsible for turning the fan on and it is obviously not "seeing" any rise in temperature. Could it be the voltage regulator on the instrument panel (assuming it has one) although the fuel gauge still works OK?

have a look at the wires going into the temp sensor - its the brown one on the top. the wires fray and short out and the fan either runs flat out (and burns out) or stops running at all.

there is a proper rover 'bodge' of a little length of wire and a new sensor.

dont know why the guage is playing up - but this sensor controls it.

The later dash packs dont have a seperate stabaliser

the mpis also have a problem with the water in the expansion tank escaping due to a weak neck seal - something else to check i guess!
