More FIA fiddling.

If they think the fans are getting a raw deal, how about getting all the third drivers to do a 20 lap sprint race on the Saturday? With so few laps it might give some real racing, it would be more entertaining than testing and also give the test drivers a chance to show what they can do. Kind of like a warm-up show, except it would probably be better than the main event!

I can understand abolishing the 3rd car. But that also deprives the test drivers of opportunities to actually do something useful during a race weekend, apart from merely observing from the sidelines.

The idea of having a mini-race with test drivers is pretty good, but I don't think teams will risk their multi-million dollar F1 cars for that.

On the Friday or Saturday, put the test drivers in identically-configured F3 or FR2.0 cars and let them duke it out in a 30 minute sprint race. They can do 3 flying laps for qualifying. A lot of F1 test drivers do not compete in a race season while they are doing their testing job, so this will help to keep their racecraft sharp, provide entertainment for the viewing audience, and give F1 teams an idea of how their test drivers fare against others.

It can be voluntary, so participation is up to the individual test driver, but I doubt that any soon-to-be F1 racer worth his/her salt would pass up the opportunity to flex their prowess.

Do you mean "Allow them to practice their in laps and out laps."?

Or is there some other form of racecraft regularly required in F1?

Maybe compulsory pit stop in this mini race then (so samll tanks and short life tyres to make it 'real' and, er, a compulsory safety car period to provide for practice of re-starts.

There - great format.

Or maybe just send them off to NASCAR?
