Newbie question with canon lenses here...

I've just ordered a Canon EOS 350D, which will arrive monday, complete with the "standard" lens, my Dad has a Canon EOS10 (35mm film not digital) which he rarely uses.

I have been googling a fair bit on the subject, but now it's time to ask the experts... Can I "borrow" some of his lenses to use on my new purchase ? I've read that the EF-S lenses the 250D uses can't be used on the EOS10, as the lens will impact the mirror in operation. I presume this means that I can use his EF lenses as they'll be shorter ?

I know there's a difference between the sensor of the digital and the 35mm film of around 1:1.6, meaning, if I've got this right, that an 18mm lens on the Digital will perform the same as a 35 will on the film ?

So a 210mm lens will be huuuge ?

Help the newbie out

Cheers

Matthew

Yep...it's only a problem going the other way, ie he will not be able to use your 18-55 as it's an EF-S and has a "bit" extra in the lens ring that stops it locking into place.

The effective focal length will change a bit as you describe though, due to the APS sensor on a 350 rather than full frame on the 10. 1.6 crop as I recall.

And as you say due to the 1.6 crop the lens will "appear" to be 1.6 times as long as it really is.

I use the 28-90 and 75-300 that I got with my old film kit on my 350D (actually I never use the 28-90, but the 75-300 comes in handy).

I didn't get the kit lens (bought body only) so the challenge for me was getting short enough lenses, but I now have a Sigma 18-50 which I'm very pleased with. Though still keep wondering about a 10-22 or similar. However, the car is using all the money at the moment ...

Excellent news, cheers guys ! He's got a nice range of lenses, from macro lenses, all the way up to iirc a 300mm, then teleconverters, filters etc... inherited from my grandad... and he prefers his £130 Argos Digital Compact. So I offered to relieve him of the lenses

Can the 350 use lenses without the EF electronics on them, but in manual mode ? Or will it all just go to pot ?

Sorry for the stupid questions, I'm new to DSLR, and hazy on SLR... but the opportunity arose for a 350 at very reasonable money

Should be able to. You can get adaptors for coverting the old FD manual lenses to EOS bodies. Completely manual operation of course - even more so than on an old FD based 35mm body ...

I think I'll steer clear of the fully manual option for a while yet

Thanks for all the great help guys, I'll probably be back on Monday, once I've got it and charged it
