Does anyone know what the regulations are for markings of a disabled parking space?

I got a ticket for parking in one that didn't look like one... nothing on the ground, no 'extra width' etc. Turns out there was a small sign on a pole nearby. Across the car park there are disabled parking spots that have ground markings, chevron'd areas either side etc..

Is there a web site that specifies the regulations for all restricted parking?

Hi Justin - MK city centre car parking near a bank. Disabled parking spots are all over the place and bloody obvious by virtue of their road markings etc. etc. Poxy little sign that looks the same as all the other poxy little signs (at a glance) does not a disabled space make IMO. I'm going to contest it whatever. Would just be nice to quote a specific regulation in the nastygram.

Boss you don't say whether this was on or off street parking area.

For Disabled bays on street then a Traffic Regulation Order is required and parking bays marked out in accordance with Traffic Signs and General Directions 2002 on parking areas but extra given on max widths to normal bay sizes. Have to be signed as such by use of plates (Diagram 661A) to indicate and word DISABLED down sign shown in the Regs.

Off street TSGD no force in law and seems generally marked with either plate or symbol and transgressions dealt with under terms of parking allowed by owner of private land. Signs have to be erected to the effect that terms and conditions apply without spelling out chapter and verse.

Thanks DVD.

The parking is Off street (I guess) and it's council/municipal land, not private.

I'm after the specific Act/paragraph that determines what a designated disabled person's parking space looks like.

It must be bloody obvious to see:

. . . otherwise a disabled won't know where to park. Hope you find the words to quote and slap 'em. All the luck.

I agree. Literally opposite the two spaces in question is a 'bloody obvious' line of 4 disabled spaces - signs, "DISABLED" written across the front of each space, chevrons between the extra wide spaces, wheelchair graphics in each space.

The two spaces (I only parked in one of them ) are normal size and have actually had "Disabled" lettering removed from their edge and there is no wheelchair graphic in either. All there is, is a small sign on a pole.

I shall not be paying the ticket. Fk 'em.

It states in Traffic Signs Manual Chapter 5 Road Markings 2003 that the letters 'DISABLED' may be ommitted.

This is usually the case on cobbled streets or areas where markings are kept to a minimum.

The wheelchair markings are used for private car parks normally such as supermarkets, leisure centres etc..

Sounds like the spaces have been decomissioned but nobody's taken the (small) sign down?
