Hi.

Can anyone offer me any advice about waxes as it's driving me insane?

Basically I've been told I don't need to use polish on my new car as it has a clear coat and it doesn't have any scratches or swirls yet. I've been told that all I need to use is a good quality wax 2 or 3 times a year. However, I was going to use Meguiars Gold Class Liquid Wax or the Nxt Tech Wax however I've been told they both are safe on clear coats but contain both a polish and wax combined?! Now I'm unsure what I'm supposed to use because everywhere I go I get told something different. Also I'm unsure which car wash shampoo I can use now incase that wrecks the paintwork, I've always used Gold Class Shampoo before but I'm not sure whether it is suitable on new car finishes?

Any help would be appreciated!

A polish is a light abrasive. It is for removing the top layer of the vehicle's finish while leaving it (reasonably) glossy. If there's light damage in the top layer of (in your case) lacquer, this would remove it.

Since it removes the top surface, polishing should never be done if not necessary, so you've had good advice.

Wax is non-abrasive. It sits on top of the finish without altering it. It may fill in slight scratches, improving the look of the finish until it wears off.

Waxing protects the lacquer from exposure to environmental threats - pollution, bird mess, even oxygen (which is damaging stuff).

Waxing is always necessary to maintain the finish for as long as possible.

A wax polish does both jobs. Since it IS a polish, it is abrasive. Don't use it unless there's damage to polish out. Buy a pure wax. Many detailers will recommend a carnauba wax - although these are ever so slightly yellow.

Hope this helps!
