Livebox coming. anyone use?
Discussion
Got a Wanadoo/Orange Livebox coming 'cos I have a £30/month mobile tariff, and therefore my broadband is now free.
Anyone got one, what do I do with it?
I've got a newish PC, a 1 week old Vaio laptop, and PS2.
should be able to do something cool with all that but what?
Yours in anticipation....
Had the Livebox for about three months now. Very easy to set up if you follow the instructions EXACTLY!
Wireless and talk is OK, but not really worth the extra £4 a month, IMO, so will be sacked when the free six months is up.
Connection generally reliable, although we have had a couple of periods of downtime over the past couple of weeks.
Have tried to get an old Toshiba lappy running win98 wireless but I suspect there's something in the livebox that stops you using Belkin bits to connect; the Wanadoo wireless adaptor is £40 odd if you want another. Ours came with cable and one wireless adaptor thingie.. Me cynical? Noooooo......
All in all an OK bit of kit, although I've had no experience of any other.

Thanks mate, just one extra question and I realise I should just wait until the documentation arrives BUT....
What connects to what? Can I use my laptop and connect wirelessly to the internet without turning on the desktop PC? Does the livebox connect directly to the BT wallsocket via filter or what?
ta, will.
It's just a standard wireless router with a phone-over-internet socket. Plug into wall. Plug wireless network thing into PC, configure both, play. In theory anyway. It was cool a year or so ago but rather behind the times now, and Wannapoo (Orange) seemed to insist on installing a stupid amount for driver software on the PC, hijacking the browser and rebranding things.
I had one on evaluation at Christmas, the wireless range was terrible, it is a stupid wedge shape so can't be stacked with other things. It tends to get rather warm too. Of course, it didn't help that mine started to update its firmware without telling me, with the result that I powered it down in mid-update. Successive reboots just gave a puzzling error that the manual didn't cover. No thanks to the support people, I managed to obtain a set of firmware for it, which I updated over the cable. I believe Orange now charge you for the privilege of using their Livebox, if there is an option not to use the Livebox, and to use your own router then I would take it.
You can connect more or less as many PCs to it (over wireless) as you want. Each PC 'node' communicates with the interweb via the Livebox, and not through any other PC.

Hijack....... Rebrand....... .....Browser
Arghhhhhhhh!!!!!
I've only just taken back control of my computer from SONY, who seem to think it's a good idea to lock your homepage to their stoopid "Club Vaio"
Mind you, I do now feel completely at ease in the registry whereas it used to get the old ring twitching as I typed 'regedit'............

It hasn't hijacked my browser, in as much as I can change the "homepage" if I choose.
I was notified of the firmware updates by e-mail and they were done overnight. I had a second e-mail to confirm.
It is a stupid shape, though.

well it's all setup now, and yes it is a stupid shape, and yes it does get hot
and also yes, I set it up without the CD which just rebrands IE and puts loads of shit icons on the desktop.
and yes the wifi signal does work downstairs
and the free broadband deal means you 'hire' the livebox for the duration of your contract and seemingly have to give it back if/when you ever divorce yourself from orange.

Will,
Do you have to use the Livebox translucent briefcase thingy.
Surely you could just use a router.. I've got one spare...

how's >5000 rpm in the porker?
I'm off to visit my mate with a Carrera GT in Aug/Sept.
This one is for sale and apprarantly is being "kept running" around Malton.

you could trade in that one of yours and finance £280k over 25 years at 5% for ~£1500 per month. Or £28k per month for 1 year.
