911 v 360 There's a red devil on my shoulder!!
Discussion
After many years of 911 ownership I'm considering throwing it all in and getting a 360. Has anyone gone down the same road? I have no concerns about putting miles on the car (i'd be doing 8000 p.a.)or security, however i'd hate to be driving around in something that I was constantly expecting to break. If I could overcome this issue I'd have no problem. Its just that adverts for cars with less than 10000 miles that are on their second clutch (for example) are a little off-putting. Is this down to pulling doughnuts and other general abuse i wonder?? I'd appreciate your comments. Cheers.

Modern F-cars are pretty resilient. You just have to make sure you buy the right car that's been looked after properly. And one that's been used regularly in its recent ownership will likley be a better bet than something with hardly any miles on it at all in this respect.
You should also have a decent running fund for it (put around 3k per annum in the bank. If you have spare cash after a few years, put it towrds another car. If not, you won't have killed yourself!).
As for clutches, I've put 2 clutches in the 355 in 28k spirited miles (the one in the car when I bought it had 10k miles on it). Changed it once (at 2k miles, so about 12k on it total) as the pedal was feeling high and I was having the Tubi fitted. Changed the second time (had done about another 10k miles) because the pedal felt high and I was about to go to Europe and slap some miles on it.
Both times the bloody clutch was less than 75% worn

If driven properly for the gearbox type, the clutches should last you at least a year and probably much more. F1 euipped cars can actually tell you how many more miles the car has left on it I believe.
Note that the sort of mileage you're talking will sadly hammer its residual value. So you're either going to have to buy something with less than average miles (may not be a good thing for reliability or price!), or something cheap because of higher than average miles and swallow it.
They are very special cars though.,,,
Thanks Murph7355, good advice. I think it'll be a car with higher miles and documented history that i'll go for, like you say the lower miles attract a premium which will vanish once it is actually driven, which it will be!! The prices seem to start falling off once the miles are approaching 30k. Is this because major bills will be falling due, or because of the whole 'they're special, treat them as a work of art' mindset??
The latter.
The car should already have had some big services by 30k miles if it's been serviced properly (IIRC 36k will be the next big one from there, though age also plays a factor as belts should be done every 3yrs - 5yrs in the US for the same belts. Work that one out
).
People also believe them to be massively fragile (I'm not in this camp).
Just get familiar with service intervals and make sure the cars you look at have receipts to back up the stamps.
Gunning for a high miles car should see you net a bargain. The downside will be moving it on if you don't get on with it, so make sure you get a very aggressive price

Hi all,
Very interested in this thread as I am going the same way, (from 996 TT to 360) albeit for very different reasons !!
(1st born due at XMAS and have 6 months to enjoy my freedom before getting a 4x4 to put the pram in etc ha ha.)
We all find it very easy to justify our toys to ourselves. My rationale is that in 6 months I won't be able to have a 2 seater for quite some time, so better have 1 now.
I am looking at the similiar sort of price bracket (circa £60-65k), but must be RHD.
I will be using the car every day, as I do currently with the TT.
I know the cars are not really 'ideal' as an every day, but I have run cerberas, tuscans and 911s every day .... and as I am only going to have it for 6 months, it needs to be a long 6 months, with plenty of use !!!
I guess I'll be putting somewhere close to 8-10k on the clock in 6 months, and fully appreciate it is going to loose money, but this is my last fling as it were, so what the hell.
Does anyone on here know either of these cars advertised on autotrader?
www.avantgardecars.co.uk/GetDealer.do?did=27994&pageid=1
Rossa/nero, 33k, £57,950
http://dealerservices.autotrader.co.u
Silver/nero, W988 UJB, 20k, £59,995
Thinking of going to look at both, but would appreciate any knowledge of either owners/history if you have it.
