Methinks my camera is firmly knackered - but I've no idea why. I've not used it for about a month or so, and it's been in it's case in a drawer since then. Anyway I took her out today to get a few snap shots of my engine bay for the engine thread in General Gassing and here's how they've turned out:

It's a fairly old (c.4 years) and crappy Sony Cybershot 3.2MPixel DSC-P32 point and shoot jobby, but I wonder if any of you had seen such errors before?

The flash seems to be working okay, but interestingly enough the rear screen is showing the same images - I thought that maybe the screen had died so I took these through the view finder however as the shots still look the same I think it must be lens related??

Cheers for any info

Phil

Unless you were travelling through time whislt taking them, I'd say that either the sensor has packed up, or you have a serious software glitch.

Check the manual to see if there is a reset method.

You'll find that they will charge you more to fix it than its worth I'm afraid.

I dropped my Ricoh GR1 a year ago and smashed the viewfinder lens, still worked ok but you had to guess the framing, took it into a dealer and they sent it off to be fixed, but I was then told that they wanted £185 to fix it and you could buy a new one for about £199!

Its still at the dealer a year on!

Take it then that your engine doesn't look like that

In all seriousness, can't really see it being a lens issue, if it was lens then would be some sort of distinguishable image in there. Reckon that is more likely some electronics/sensor gone tits up. Sad thing is it's probably not ever going to be an economical repair.

Bugger - did the reset thing - no joy. Hmmm, guess I'll have to look for a new one then. But first a quick email to the Sony folks...

Thanks guys

I get similar results on my Ixus sometimes if I haven't re-formatted the card for a while.
Seriously considering a new card...

Certainly worth a try, however I read it that this what was also showing on the screen in preview (i.e before even taking a pic) hence the switch to using the viewfinder. If it was showing on the screen only after having taking the pic then yes def worth checking the card, having said that of course it is an easy thing to try out regardless, before throwing it in the bin.

Ah! Missed that. Certainly sounds like a knackered sensor then.

Hello, I've been lurking around for a while, but seeming as I can be of help, I thought I'd post this.

This is a known issue with a lot of older Sony cameras that were fitted with faulty CCDs, and a class-action lawsuit was threatened against Sony in the US if they didn't sort the camera (see here for an example of the problem.

Sony UK have also acknowledged the problem and if you go to this website, you will find a number to call to get this sorted for free!

This is unfortunately a little known about issue, and only after a lot of googling on behalf of a family member who also had this problem did I stumble across this by chance!

Hope that helps,
Adam

Hi
My Nikon 5700 developed exactly the same fault though the colour was more green. I looked on the Nikon website and found that it was a known fault and the camera was fixed at no cost even though it was almost 2 yrs old.
Definately worth contacting Sony.

Thanks, I thought I'd let everyone know as it doesn't seem to have been very well publicised by Sony (I wonder why ). Hope it helps someone anyway! And hello

And don't Sony and Nikon share sensors?
