Could someone share some wisdom, I have just sat down at my computer after viewing a "pant bulging" V8S - J Reg and I am trying not to look through "rose coloured specs".

The outer appearance was really good but I have a few susspicions

So could you tell me

1) If you look under the carpets in the passenger footweell - right at the back ( i.e to the left of your tootsies should you be able to see light coming in?

2) I know the chassis are a little suspect - but looking at the areas highlighted in the bible - the rust is quite heavy - flaking to 1 - 1.5 mm - how bad a sign is this?

3) The triangular support wedges for the chassis joins are spongey - is there supposed to be any hard rubber on top of them or something?

4) The car has been stood for a long time it has 45K on clock - 500 in last two years - would this put you off.

5) Still has original exhaust can I expect it to give up the ghost soon.

6) Pre cat - boy does the engine sound good !!- although I think it is angry at not getting a run - serious grunting - from the car as well!!!!.

No.

You need to get someone to inspect this for you as repairing the chassis could be pretty expensive. You possibly need new outriggers but maybe it can be saved.

Depends if it's stainless or not. A new exhaust is about 300 quid, new manifolds about 400 plus labour.

Good luck,

Mark

Now don't get to despondent at this stage. now is the time to buy during the winter, and I assume that this is a private sale. as previous member has suggested you will need to get these things checked out.

Next question of most importance is what can you do yourself. there are places that can lift and repair the outriggers without removing the whole body, but they may be ok anyway when checked.

As for the outrigger corners, yes there is a rubber corner mount for the body that fits on top of the metal plate. mostly they are strongly made and flaking would not always mean welding.

Give us an idea of what he wants for it and we will be able to help you with thw value. Some one on here stole an S, I mean got a absolute bargain in the last few months and it may well be if the price is right and you are prepaired to wait to drive it, it could be worth having. there is always pleasure in getting the car done up provided you don't end up pennyless.

let us know more details please.
PS. what part of the country are you in for help?

Ren,

Might be worth taking it to a local dealer/specialist, so they can chuck on the lifts and have a proper look underneath.

I had my S3 taken to Mole Valley for a check, and was chuffed with the feedback I got as it backed up the service history and what the owner told me. They told me the work I needed done (very little and nothing urgent), so I went ahead to buy.

Cost seemed expensive at £200, but compared to almost £300 asked by the AA/RAC for someone with little knowledge to check it, you can't go wrong.

Alternatively (and cheaper), if you live near anyone on the forum with the right knowledge then you could tempt them with beer or pies, and I'm sure they'd have a look see with you.
