As a point of interest, what is the least powerful engine fitted in an Ult? I heard a rumour about a 2ltr Pinto in one...is that true? What are the performance figures like for lower powered cars?

Martin.

Why bother with a 2L lump - Could understand it if fitted into a kit that cost only a few grand, but it would surely be pretty pointless to waste thousands on the Ultima kit by installing a puny engine!!

The earlier models that used the Ford V6 must be contenders, someone must have used a standard 150bhp lump in one.

I agree 100%...just curious as to what 0-60 times these installs would give.

My spyder was one of the early cars (1997) and then they put in what was considered quite beefy then... 355HP - 5.7lt... now seen as the "small rubber band powered" model....
still quite nippy, tops out at 170mph, and easy 12 sec qtr mile, which is fine for me for runs to TESCO etc.

a 2L engine goes well in an ultima, my dads got a group a cosworth rs500 engine in his spyder, and that goes very quick, gets almost 600hp out of it. managed to go quicker than the zak speed viper around the nordschleife...

the good things about having a 2liter engine is that it keeps the weight down of the car, my dads ultima is just 700kg (dry weight) and u get a lot of power almost 600hp with the turbo, its managed 197mph quite easily and would put nearly all supercars to shame... (click on the section named hobbys to see 2 pics of it)

have you got any more pics or info on your dads ultima???

i have thought about using a smaller turobed engine in the ultima. would be nice to see aBMW 6 used with a turbo strapeed on. or an EVO engine! hehe

better get the flame suit on now ready for all the purists! hehe

Chris.

Tell me if this is possible to bring the weight down to 700kg dry with the following aftermarket items. Carbon fibre/magnesium wheels, carbon fibre brakes(rotor/calibers), carbon fibre body, carbon fibre panels, aluminum radiators, titanium exhausts, mufflers, Hewland gearbox (magnesium casing), supercharge IRL engine (150kg), titanium suspension, titanium springs, front and rear chassis converted to chromoly 4130 steel. Carbon fibre racing seats (2 seats with lumbar support under 9Kg), no a/c, heat, and stereo system. Is this 700Kg?

I haven't even decided on which stage of the kit to purchase. But hopefully by 2015, I'll have a completed car. So when do you expect your car to be on the road? I can't wait to see it.

If you did all the above it would no longer be an Ultima because you would have to change alot of the chassis at the same time. I would think you would be doing well to get an Ultima in the 800-900 kg bracket...

Had hoped to have it on the road this summer but doesn't look likely at the moment. The main problem has been a to relaxed schedule and not sticking to a plan, constantly changing and modifying the spec. The end result, OIMO, will be one of the best spec'd cars out there, but then I would say that wouldn't I!.

Yes but.... The sound of a V8... Any V8.. Got to be the answer, and whilst we still can before we all start driving electric rubber band cars cos the yanks have used all the petrol!

Here here! Its all part of the 'experience' that is Ultima. I would not even consider anything other than a V8 motor but then, I did build my motor first and then looked for the most suitable platform to extol its virtues. I am a simple man with simple wants and needs, but there are a few basic rules that I try and abide by: V8's rule and black is best! being the most important.

Wayne, it seems like you have followed the route that I would follow in building an Ultima - get the motor spec sorted first, then you can plan all the rest of the spec around it. When I asked previously on the forum for advice on build process and selection of spec, others advised to build the chassis etc first and decide on the motor later as it is one of the last bits to be fitted. This goes totally against my perfectionist character and I would prefer to sort the motor spec out first. As for EFI, I agree that this is the logical more efficient route rather than carbs, but I think that because the factory don't seem to support it, this route can seem daunting to those with little or no engine building / setup experience.
