Bulb on my speedo went yesterday!
99V Chim that also has a button under the dash that turns off all the dashboard lights. Bit daft really except maybe when using the parking lights?
My Saab 9.5 Estate has a button that turns of all the dash lights except the speedo. Slightly more sensible but still another accessory that won't be used.

In case you think that your speedo lighting is dim compared to the rev counter, and therefore faulty, I think this is normal. It certainly is on mine and several others I've seen. I've no idea why they would fit an on/off switch rather than the usual rheostat, but driving cross country at night with the top off and the dash lights off is a great experience.

Speedo light is bright at the top of the dial and dim at the bottom. As I have only just got the car, assumed there was a bulb at the bottom that had gone.
Looks like your explanation will save me some work!
Just received my "bible" from TVRCC which seems to imply it's a dash out job to replace a dash bulb?
Ref driving with the top off at night with no dash lights, can see the attraction as you can hear the revs so at least have some idea of speed!

I think I am right in saying the speedo has 1 bulb the tacho has 2.

Your fuel gauge is probably dimmer than the rest aswell.

re. removing the door panels, all i can say is i hope you haven't got large forearms! It isn't mega hard, just takes patience and be prepared to get scratched/cut hands & arms.
Remove screw at rear of ash tray then remove speaker and from there access 3x 10mm nuts, one positioned in front of the speaker, the other 2 are at the bottom 1/2 of the door panel - 1/3 and 2/3rds towards the rear i guess. With this done the vinyl panel can be removed, the carpeted part is secured with 6 self tappers, the heads being in the carpet pile. Good luck and make sure the window is up, unlike me the other w/end when i couldn't work out why i couldn't get my arm back in when putting it back together!!!!

Matt 74 is absolutely right here except some have 4 nuts. Mine (1976) has two near the middle, one higher than the other. Rubber/skinny arms, left handedness (for the driver's door) and an abilty to see round corners all help with this job!

My, that is an old one! Are they Whitworth nuts?
