Brake Calipers

Is there an easy way to get these bloody things off? The Allan bolts seem to be welded in - do garages use a special tool? Any threads?

Put a ring spanner on the end of the allen key.

That's this weeks tool tip.

you should put a releasing agent on them really plus gas or even WD40 you don't
want to snap the bolts

Can I take the front half off on its own or is it best to take off the whole unit?
Wish I'd never seen a cerb with red calipers now!!!!!!!

Get yourself a hex bit socket (or a set!) from Halfrauds. Good tip to use WD40/penetrating oil first though

i'm sure any body shop would be able to do this for you. i was looking at doing it myself.

if your interested, im doing a respray of some new calipers im putting on my Prelude, i'm not doing them max power styles, but i will show you some tips etc.. Probably this weekedn i'll be posting the writeup on my Prelude site, i'll post it here if your interested.

My rear calipers were stuck fast when I took them off last winter. I heated the area around the bolt with a creme brulee (sp?) mini blow tourch type thing. That worked a treat.

Well, I decided to paint the calipers whilst still on the car. This job proved to be an absolute bast**d - you need a hand as steady as a rock, the caliper paint is like thick glue/porridge and its taken me two days so far and I still haven't finished. I wish I'd never started. I'll post some pics when I've finished so you can see what a bit of perserverance brings. However, I do not recommend this job to anybody who has the slightest impatient side - get someone else to do it, but not me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not as yet, been flat stick with work. I shall be doing it sometime this week though mate, so stay tuned.

Well I finally got them finished and everything back on. What a sodding pain that turned out to be. I'm not sure if it was worth all the effort and I definitely won't be rushing to get the back ones done...

I thought about taking the calipers off, but the allen bolts were pretty solid and it meant disconnecting everything and taking everything apart to clean and then painting and then having to put it all back together again.

It was the actual laborious task of painting them and the consistency of the paint etc... The paint did its job though, as you can see they look quite good. Just don't expect to do it in an afternoon!
