As some of you have seen i stuffed the bike a couple of weeks ago and am still waiting for the insurance company to get their arse into gear. (nothing unusual there then)

As with most policies my leathers, gloves and lid were not covered on the motorcycle insurance policy but i had a chat with somebody the other week who suggested that i could do this under my house insurance. Has anybody had an experience of this and know who i would go about it. (yes i know contact the insurance company...)

All the bits are nearly a grand so it is well worth the claim.

Cheers

I think my brother calimed on his house insurance for his kit when he parted company from his bike about 4 years ago. The worst that can happen is that they say no!

I did this some years back, depends how good your home policy is. I had to get a quote for new kit from a shop and the ins co sent me a cheque payable to the shop for the amount, less the policy excess, which was about £40 - £50 IIRC.

Many years ago, I claimed for a new helmet on my contents insurance policy and sent photos - they requested I send them the helmet as well to check for any futher damage as there didn't appear to be much external damage. I'd High-sideded over a dry stone wall and landed in a boggy field (really greatful that it always rains in Northern Ireland!) and popped two disks in my neck and three in my back and fractured one vertebrae. There was no way I was going to every wear that helmet ever again!

Insurance promptly paid up.

The same rules would apply if you claimed for a ruined business suit or coat, etc as they cover your pesonal possessions outside of the house as well as at home for accidental damage.

I claimed on my "kit" insurance it's similar to contents but costs a bit more and specifically covers everything I own, plus everything I have signed for and am liable for from my employers anywhere in the world at any time, it's underwritten by NU. I claimed when I crashed a race bike at pembrey and had a big 100mph+ off, paid out no questions asked for leathers, helmet, gloves and boots about £2.5K in total which wasn't bad as it was all sponsored anyway £50 excess, it costs about £40 a month but I have no other insurance policies apart from vehicles as this one does the same as contents/travel/buildings/sports equipment (e.g race or trackday bike against theft) plus I even let my TVR and road bike insurances lapse in the winter as they are insured under this policy while in the garage.

I claimed for all my riding kit with Zurich, about £1500 quids worth and they paid out no problem. Just asked for an estimate for replacement which Hein Gerike supplied me with.

Should be covered under your 'personal affects' section of your policy as long as your sum insured is Ok there should be no problem at all. Do not over egg your claim, claim like for like or as near as, Ins. Co's get quite spiteful if they discover your trying to claim for better quality kit than you lost etc.

Had an off a couple of years ago and thought about this some days later myself. My home contents included personal items away from the home. The insurers sent an assessor round - who could see that I had been wearing the gear at the time - and I was able to provide receipts for just about all the clothing. They deduct a percentage per year for wear and tear, though the oldest item was about three years old. Even allowing for that the claim came to about £900 and they settled up really quickly. They don't insist on purchasing it for you, as they may for electrical or other home items, as they are quite specialist so the insurers do not have a deal with anyone to supply them.

The insurance is comprehensive but arranged through the mortgage lender, but as a guide, you should get reasonable coverage under a good contents policy. They may have a maximum claim amount or maximum per single item, so make sure your expensive Arai is covered!
