Learned gentlemen...

I am considering purchasing my first Porsche. I intend to own it for about a year as I'm recently married and hope to be hearing the patter of tiny feet in the not too distant future...

Bearing that in mind, if you were choosing between a facelift 996 (perhaps a Targa in a saleable colour) and a base-Cayman both priced around the 38-39k mark which do you think would depreciate less? Cayman because of the rarity factor or 996 because its done most of its depreciating?

I reckon I stomach losing about 6-10k in total for this once in a lifetime experience - is this realistic?

Your thoughts please...

Generally the rule is older the car, the less it will depreciate (percentage-wise), so I would say 996. However, where (when?) are you getting a £38k Cayman from?

If you want to really want to limit your depreciation loss, how about a 993? Those prices have been very firm for years and your budget would get you a mint one.

Cayman would be a non-S - with a few select extras on the P Configurator they come in at 38/39k. Have thought about 993s but concerned about a massive expenditure for some sort of out of OPC warranty failure.

Depreciation is that huge black hole into which an estimated £50 billion disappears each year

And it hurts the people most who buy over-specc'd new cars, do above average mileage, and then sell them after a relatively short period.

Caymans are quite new, but they will become increasingly common with more used examples for sale, so prices will probably fall in line with other Porsche models.

Typically, Porsches depreciate by around 15% pa and that would probably apply to a new Cayman or a used 996 '3.6'. Targas can be less popular than Coupes.

Obviously if you buy the right car, and keep it long term, depreciation shouldn't be a major consideration.

Second hand 996 C4S from an OPC? Can you get them for that?

I'd stay away from base Cayman... it's going to depreciate like a stone compared to the S once the novelty wears off.

Also stay away from a Targa if you wanna be at the lesser end of your market. On the upside they've been totally hammered resale wise already, but on the downside Porsche have recently announced, to some surprise, the 997 Targa, which will hardly help values.

If you budget 10k per year you should be fine though.....

With £38k -ish you could get a low mileage specimen 993 c4s , '97-98 and get it OPC warrantied for the year , sell it before the warranty runs out .. I'd put bets you'd lose .........
nathin!!!
(AND that's coming from a basement 996 owner , sacrilege!!)

Hmmm, you'd lose less, but nice 993 C4Ss are struggling to keep their head above the 30k mark at the moment. Not quite sure why.

As a rough guide, only things that are non-depreciating as a breed are 964RS, 993RS, 993GT2 and maybe 996GT3s bought at the right price. C4Ss of 993 and 996 nature will still fall.

Whilst we're in confessional mode I'll even admit the 993 sounds nicer (don't quote this I might have to delete it later). Pre-impacts look the best for me though.

Back on topic I'd go 996. There'll always be someone who wants to own a 911. Still early days for the Cayman so it represents a higher risk.

I guess us 996 boys are comfortable enough in our own skins to still be able to admire other (lesser ) 911 models ...

.. Its the confidence that comes with driving the best ....

I hope that equates to some kind of recovery!!!!!!

Edited cause I can't spell '911'

Getting back on topic , I would be VERY surprised to see a low mileage '97-98 c4s for less than 35k .. They're dropping at about 3-5k a year at most , as far as I can see.. Show me a sub 30k specimen c4s and I'll show you a queue with wads a-waving!

On the 996 front , a '02-03 manual coupe seems to be the one that is holding residuals best at the mo.. I think a new basement cayman will definitely lose more over the year.

Crikey Ballcock

I was really starting to worry about you.

Next thing you will be telling us is that you have applied for a Total 911 (993) subscription.

Thinking such thoughts can only lead to the dark side
