Power loss ! - Feels like fuel starvation????

Hey guys, new noble owner here. (GTO 3R) I've had the car for about 3 weeks, and have spent roughly 70% of each day inside the car hurtling around since! I'm totally blown away and addicted. I never thought I'd find a car as fun as my old elise... but... anyway you guys know what Im talking about.
I've been meaning to join up to a forum, and now that I've got a question the motivation finally appears =)
Here is the sitrep:
Had been booting it about on some b roads, only to emerge onto the M1 (UK here). About 3 minutes into cruising along in 6th on the motorway, applying pressure to the accell. suddenly caused powerdrain, revs falling down... It felt almost exactly like when you run a car completely out of fuel. I coasted onto the hard shoulder, narrowly avoiding numerous irrate units of traffic. Again I test the accel. in 2nd... the engine would run fine at very low revs, but as soon as I put my foot down... the engine lost power again. The engine never stalled. So I crept along the hard shoulder until I arrived at a services (luckily less than a mile away) and had a look under the rear clam. Nothing was obviously out of place.
There was a burning smell, that I guess was close to a kind of clutch burning smell, during the initial power losses. This smell was also there on opening the rear clam.
I let the car cool, and then did some tests. Car started as usual. So slowly building up power I did some runs up and down the car park. The problem did not re-occur once!? even booting it in second, all the power seemed to be there.
Bizarre. I phoned my dealer and made arrangements to take the car in. I filled the tank up, in case it had been out of fuel and my guage was faulty (I had over 1/3 full during the incident). And drove it to the garage, and they're looking at it now.
Anyone ever experienced anything like this?
p.s. COMPLETELY forgot to mention. Just prior to the powerloss, the speedo needle was jumping all over the place. (it was wet and this could be the usual wet speedo sensor error)
p.p.s car is second hand and has 8k on it.
