When I was taking the battery out earlier (because the car won't start as per previous post), I noticed a resistor on a wire hanging down, shrouded in clear plastic, looping back up again into the cars 'ether'. Is this normal, or has someone put on one of those "Add 20bhp to your car!" nightmares from ebay? (argh!)

Thanks!

No this is normal, no problem its a factory fitment.
One resistor is for non cat cars, the other for cars fitted with catalytic convertors.
Cheers
Paul.

IIRC the ECU has one mode for catalytic converters and another for no cats, and the presence or absence of the resistor selects the ECU's mode.

If it looks rusty / damaged, measure its resistance with a DMM .. it should be around 3.9k ohms for a cat car (from memory).

I had a fault code because mine was corroded and reading 5.1k. On opening the plastic up it fell to pieces.
