Sorry but a very boring day at work...

If you'd bought a new 997 in January 2006 for £75,000 you'd probably get back ~£67,000 now, equivalent to a ~10% loss of £8,000 or over £1,000 a month.

If you'd bought £75,000 worth of Porsche shares in January 2006, you'd get back £92,750 now, equivalent to a ~24% profit. Assuming you're in the 40% tax bracket, that'd mean ~£10,500 profit or over £1,500 a month.

Just shows you, you can actually make money by owning Porsche, just not a Porsche car..!!

All us guy buying Porsche cars is certainly making some people rich.. Now where's my broker's number..??

The only answer is to buy the cars and hedge yourself with the shares

I'd rather have the car and stick that in a hedge. :P

So instead of paying cash for the car, take the dealers finance @ around 4% & invest the money in Porsche shares. You should still make money.

please note, values of shares can drop as well as rise

Total "back of the envelope" but assuming you did have £75k in cash in January there's a financing scenario whereby putting down a deposit and the rest in Porsche shares, you're monthly payments would be covered by Porsche's share price rise and you'd still walk away with a profit after selling the car today, including depreciation. In effect, Porsche paying you to drive their car... interesting (in a number geek kinda way..).

This is all of course theoretical nonsense with the benefit of hindsight but like I said, it's a very boring day at work...!!

Hmmm. Buy some shares and the car, and you'll pretty much break even ...

Looking at the shareprice the week of the posting (EUR770) and today (EUR52), I'd say you were wrong. You'd have been better off buying a 997

If you bought a 997S for £75k it's worth £45k today ?

If you bought a 991S for £100k it's worth about £60k today.

And that's if you get full retail Value back, deduct another £7k for trade values .

No ones making money from normal cars ! Add in that pcp interest at another £20k as 85% cars are pcp the true costs of owner ship might be an eye opener :-)

That 991s has now cost you £70k to own for 4 years !! A mugs game one might say and that's why shares have gone up, :-)

The share value has gone down dude. Porsche shares have lost 93.25% of their value since the original expert (in investment banking ironically) advised buying Porsche shares rather than a Porsche car.

You cannot say the value has gone down because you are comparing apples with oranges. When this post was originally written in 2006 the shares would have been in Porsche AG, the car manufacturer and those shares no longer exist because the company is now wholely owned by VW and the shares are not publically traded. Porsche Automobil Holding SE is just that, a holding company, which holds the 50% of VW shares as part of the merger deal. Therefore this companies only income is a dividend and it's shares will mirror VW because that's it's only asset.

You should have bought the car on the never never at 4% and put £75,000 into Bitcoin and then 8 months later p/x'd the 997 for a GT3RS and Cayenne Turbo.
