Earth wire??

Just been greasing the UJ's and noticed a small earth wire hanging down.
It's right above the O/S rear top suspension mount, right above the spring, and now hanging above the driveshaft.
It's snapped, but I cannot see what it connected to?
Anyone know what it's for??

Also...and maybe more alarming, i noticed when opening the boot the carpet around the box that the tailpipe is housed has melted
Having looked around underneath at the tailpipe..it seems that the thermal insulation isn't all that great. (looks really old..probably original).
Where could I get some..quickly, Halfrauds??

I didn't think the tailpipe could get so hot as to melt boot carpet either!!

Fuel pump? Fuel tank sender? Does everythnig still work? If so tape it up and worry about it after BBWF!!!

Anything electrical near it, fuel pump, electric aerial, lights etc that it might be earthing? I guess it's possible it's just earthing the filler neck or something like that?

I thought it was the rear O/s tail lights...as they co-incidentally didn't work, but it turns out a fuse had gone. So they now work. Strange.
It's a very thin strap, but where ever I move around it around in an arc to see what it connected to..nothing??

As for the melted carpet, i'm off now to pick up some new heat insulation!!

Ah...is it a thin braided wire? If so, I think it's the degaussing wire to earth the fuel tanks to preven a build up a static...i think.
