Anybody else got a 224 cam, Bosch injectors, ACT trumpets, smooth bore induction pipe and MA re-map in a 5 liter car ? If you have I would be interested to know how drivable it is on a light throttle. Mine pulls cleanly with the throttle open and has plenty of go above 3k but on a light throttle around town or burbling along country lanes it is very unpleasant. It is shunty and gives the impression of a misfire. Is that normal for the mods. If it is normal I am of a mind to go back to a standard cam as I don’t enjoy driving it any more, it used to pull cleanly from tickover.

What about the "stealth" cam? It was developed just as my MC2 was fitted and from what others have said, it would have suited me perfectly. My car is essentially standard mechanically so not like yours, but the MC2 cam is a bit irritating at low revs.

I believe that I have a Kent 234supersport profile cam (TVR supplied so not quite sure as apparently they machine off the Kent stamping) with reworked trumpets and inlet manifold. When first done it was a pig at low revs, hunting and lurching at anything below 2,000rpm. I found it pretty much undrivabe unless I was nailing it. So I had MA set it up on the rolling road - rechip & fit Bosch injectors. It's now drivable down to 1,600rpm and pulls from this with no problem. Doesn't run out of steam either like it used to - just pulls all the way through to 6,000rpm. It's not the sweet V8 it was with the standard cam where it would pull in 4th from 1,200rpm - but acceptable in town or a traffic jam and no more hunting or lurching.

Looking at the Kent website it seems that the 234 is a step further than the 224. They say the 244 is for “spirited road use” and the 234 is a motorsport cam not recommended for road use. So if your car pulls from 1600rpm without shunting and my less aggressive 224 is not really happy until above 2k it tends to suggest I do have a problem. MA has had two goes at it, the second being a big improvement but it is still a right pain around town. Anybody else got the 224 fitted ?

Steve just out of interest, you dont know what heads moto has on his engine to compare the shnting with, secondly i doubt very much it is a 234, you just would not be able to pull the revs down that low without shunting, the 234 is a more aggresive cam than what my h404 is and thats not very good at light throttle.

Ah Rob, you know what you are about. As I understand it the problem to do with the throttle opening, ie. the volume of gas that is flowing. So, if the ignition is retarded for poodling around town does that require more throttle for a given engine speed and help the situation ?

In the grand scheme of things how aggressive is the 224 then ?

Steve - My Griff seem to have pretty similar mods to yours ( 224 cam, Bosch injectors, ACT trumpet base, smooth bore induction pipe and MA re-map all on a 5 liter engine).

Whilst the car doesn't idle along at low revs as easily it used to before the mods - basically if I am pootling and if I get down to below 2000 revs it does start to shunt a bit.

Basically I have found that I have had to adjust my driving style a little - by either changing down sooner so as to keep the revs up - or if I am in First gear dipping the clutch a little earlier.

Took my a little while to get used to - but it has (well almost) become 2nd nature over the past few months.

Perhaps yours is worse than mine - difficult to really know from just reading your posts.

Thanks for your comments Richard. The tick over is quite ragged and I have no problem with that, except possibly that it is a lot easier to stall in traffic when hot. I did that the day I collected it and then struggled to restart it again. The thing that bugs me is driving at 30mph, I have to keep dipping the clutch or even find I do quite a bit of coasting. Another solution is to apply the handbrake which requires more throttle for the same speed.

One thing I have just thought of is I changed the diff a while ago and noticed that the gearing had changed even though it was marked the same as the old one. I considered it a benefit at the time because it allowed spirited acceleration in 1st without un planned clouds of tyre smoke. Perhaps that small change in gearing has moved 30mph just below the point where it becomes useable.

Yes it will help the situation quite a lot, just out of interest you are not running a vac advance pipe are you? a 224 is a fairly aggresive cam on a general scheme it is slightly more aggresive than my h404, mapped ignition should help the situation out a hell of a lot.

Yes the vac pipe is connected but not certain it is doing anything. Been pondering on a bit of electronics to experimentally delay the LT pulses from the dizzy and add some retard.
