Looking into it further one of the fatacs involved an 11 year old boy who was killed when his father ignored warnings about loose chippings, lost control and ploughed into the back of a traffic unit attending an earlier incident.

Much as my sympathy goes to the father and mother for their loss, which he in partcauloar will have to live with for the rest of his life, would a camera have stopped this utter numptyism?

Illegal speeds down this road are quite safe a lot of the time, but over the blind summits and bends are suicdal. I just bet the cameras appear on the straights and not the bends, revenue raised job done but road no safer.

Fromt the article:

Kevin Platt said:
We have considered the introduction of speed cameras on this stretch of road in the past, but it did not meet the necessary criteria at the time.
However, in view of the latest accidents, we will review whether a request should now be made to the Road Safety Camera Partner-ship to install them.

This is a fine example of 'regression to the mean'(RTTM) waiting to happen.

RTTM is the MAIN REASON that crashes reduce at speed camera sites. It has NOTHING to do with any beneficial effect of the cameras, and EVERYTHING to do with the rules for speed camera placement.

Read about RTTM: www.safespeed.org.uk/rttm.html

And the latest way the DfT cheated the public with false and misleading claims:

The revolting people who advocate (and often profit) from cameras will seize any opportunity to justify their business / source of income.

My sympathies also go to the family. Head injury in the car, Hmmm sorry i can't help thinking. That there was a lack of use of a seatbelt here, Cameras don't catch that offence either. I could be wrong. Don't know the full facts etc, but i can't help thinking that. Been told too many porkies in the past. Atb Derek

There are loads of sections of dry stone wall on the Snake where cars have sailed right through them. It always makes me laugh (yes, laugh) because you really have to be a complete numpty to lose control on that road. I imagine many of these accidents are people driving at silly speeds during winter, when there is frequently black ice on the surface. I've almost been caught out myself, almost lost the back end of my Carlton estate years ago due to inexperience.

Theres nothing dangerous about it. Its a mountainous twisty road with a medium-quality surface. Its great for blitzing up and down, or just cruising and admiring the view.

If you crash on that road due to your own actions, you're a ing idiot. Basically.

Basically they are justifying the camera which will no doubt be on the straights due to muppets flying off the road at
a) Rivelin valley (you know the right hander SO into tree)
b) bends at Hollow Meadows with someone into back of a fully liveried unit!! ffs!!!!
c) the bends as you drop down to the Norfolk.

The camera, apart from RTTM as PS mentions, will do sod all.

Cue lowered limits, how long before it is 40 from Sheffield to Glossop, and then we'll get the dangerous overtakes multiplying by the dozen.

This is the one I picked up on as well.

We had a similar story about the A82 here recently, someone complaining they nearly crashed because a lorry was stationary as they came round a bend.

There are so many variables on this road it is impossible to say speed is the cause. In winter it is icy even on a fine day the temprature can be freezing up there. Rain is prevalant which is why there are resovoirs there, but why let facts get in the way of the cash machine. What really gauls me though are the people who move onto a main road which has been and remains a major trunk route and then complain about the traffic. and these are the very same people who rip through other villages and indeed their own. If they are so bothered they should sell up and move, but wait it is much easier to strangle a major road for the odd halfwit who who mixes fiction with selfishness. The stocksbrdige by pass is another where cameras were introduced to mask the bad road design and the stupid driving that took place. Whist all deaths are tragic the one that finally got specs on that section was a family who got killed when the mother who was driving turned around to shout/talk to the kids whilst stll driving. It wouldn't have mattered where that was but it served the scamera supporters case.
