Ive removed the packing from my exhaust, but it now whistles when over 3500 revs. So I am thinking about sleeving it.
It seems there are 2 options. Has anyone experience of either opening up the silencer box and welding in solid pipes, or removing the silencer box altogether and welding pipes in?
Is a lot noisier?

Its got to be better than the whistle.
Any thoughts on welding the pipes inside the silencer, or alternatively cutting the silencer box out and welding straight thro pipes in?

Numerous you have my child -

1) Sleeve it - which is what i had with a full decat - LOUD - without the decat it sounds nice
2) Offords stick in a couple of cherry bombs which sound 'Da bomb
3) Sports exhaust - which is what i have now with a decat - not as loud but bassier and nicer than what i had before..

I have had exactly the same as you except the Pre-Cats which are being done tomorrow. How much difference did the Pre-Cat removal make do you think?

Can make it sound like you have knock in the engine on tick over for some reason but the overall sound is better

Hi,
I was told it may effect back pressure as the Rover V8 needs a certain amount to function correctly but to be honest i found no difference in performance only more exhaust noise from under the bonnet, a more throaty feel

Did either of you notice any grey (or even black) soot-like staining on the bodywork around the tail-pipe after driving it - only other threads suggest this happens after the pre-cats are removed - what do you think?

Mine had the same problem, The rear end of the exhaust tended to get hotter and when coolong condensation forms and when you start her from cold this tended to manifest itself as black watery soot - just ask any of the tunnelrunners that i used to cover in the stuff - Twerlie is a particular lover of my vehicle

Definitely don't agree with you there old boy.

The exhaust mod and pre-cat removal is the single best thing I could imagine doing to my car. It makes the blood & thunder V8 sound like God (and no doubt, Peter Wheeler) intended before the nannying EU got in the way...

IM, like how loud do you wanna go ,ill go with the precat & maincat removal, but the sleeve job is just to loud to the point of offensive if you have to leave early in the morning.if a guy next door to you started he,s harley on open pipes every morning i bet you would do your b*llocks.

One thing worth considering is if you ( or the next owner) ever want to day track day or sprint. Noise restrictions are getting tighter all the time. My 98 Griff, still with all It’s cats was sleeved by the previous owner and at 2/3 revs at 0.5M it measures at 101db which is too loud for a fair few track day venues but just ok for sprints.

Sound is such a subjective thing, the V8s with a standard exhaust sounded louder and certainly carried further but actually measured a lot less at 98db. Some of the bike engined single seaters like the Jedi and OMS sound painfully loud but mostly come in less than 95db

What I am saying is it more a case of resonance and tuning than shear VOLUME that gives a good effect.
