Do mobile speed vans only measure along one lane?

When mobile speed vans are setup over motorway gantrys/bridges do they only measure the traffic in the lane they are above?
About 2 weeks ago I was going slightly too quickly and spotted one just as I was overtaking some traffic in the middle lane. I think the van was pointed along the outside lane though. Normal practice?

Looking at the scameras from their point of view they would be in the places, times and lanes which make the most money. Unless the traffic is very light (and thus they could get more money elsewhere) this would be the outside lane as it should have the fastest drivers.
They are supposed to make a prior assessment of speed before aiming and zapping but, I believe that except for a few operators from my own experience of cases I have seen it is point it at a lane and shoot each car that comes through...

I would even go as far and say they would even target those on the opposite carriageway if they could get clear line of sight......
Depending on how you define “slightly too quickly” you might just escape; speedos usually overread by a few percent, also the threshold for prosecution is around 10%+2mph above the limit.
Perhaps it was only an ANPR setup?

No. There are certain bridges on the M4 where the van will sit to the far right of the bridge, above the hard shoulder of the opposite carriageway.
I suspect when parked nearer the middle they have two operators and target both ways, in an efficiency drive to double the takings.
Which makes me wonder why they don't have vans on every bridge? Ahh, of course, that would mean the traffic would twig and actually slow down to 70! That's the last thing they want rest assured!!
I think not, i was driving towards a camera van on a bridge, I moved to the the left and the van reversed, then moved to the right, he went forward, this went on 4 times... made me look like a drink driver. Haha, I sped up after, not realising they can get you moving away, so I believe. Must have made quite funny footage, if slightly distracting to me.
