Steaming Swirl Pot
Discussion
Fitted a Steve Heath screw in place of the standard one at the weekend. Took car into work this morning without previously testing it (yes I know it was foolish ... ) but about 3miles down the road I noticed plumes of white stuff following me ! Instantly knew what it was so pulled in to a side road, waited 10mins to cool down and refitted old big screw which I had left in the boot - just in case. (All this to the bemusement of local School kids who are obviously not used to seeing a man in shirt and tie with head under bonnet with spanners, oily rag ....
)
Checked levels and virtually no loss - get a lot of steam from very little water. Continued onto work and no problems (and still a lot less than the guy who comes by train and is having to put up with buckled rails due to heat.)
Anyway, the SH screw was as tight as it could be so is there a way to get a better seal - possibly get a thicker rubber 'O' ring ?
(Hope I got that right and the swirl pot is the one with the brass screw. Header tank is the one with the blue cap where you top up ? Always get these names the wrong way round).

Hi,
did this to the Griff a while back although the seal must have been good as no coolant loss.
Do remember somewhere reading that you can give the top of the tank a light rub down with fine emery paper or similar to take out any small bumps etc which may help.
Also can you swap the 'O' ring from old one...?

The sealing ring Isn't an O ring as they simply don't last as they are the wrong profile. The seal is a special design specific to the plug. As said before, might need a bit of a clean with a bit of emery paper just to make sure the surface is clean.
If you are still having problems, mail me offline.

Thanks GWS and Steve.
Wasn't trying to do the plug a disservice Steve. It's a quality bit of engineering and much easier to fit than he original. Only posted so that any handy tips could be seen by all. Will try the emery clean up as there could well be some gunge or grease on the rim I suppose.
