OK it's my turn to get me hands dirty

Nasty grating noise from the box changing from 1 to 2nd and 3rd to 4th. Also the same with a little downward pressure on the gear stick. Almost certainly the remote bushes caput and remote rubbing on the output shaft flange.

Q1 Can i do it by cutting out the gear lever leather shroud or do I have to take the whole dash/tunnel out (no means of getting it in the air to do from below). If so how do i remove the dash?

Q2..... I've forgotten question 2

I did mine from below using my inspection pit, took me a couple of hours at most, mate round the corner did his from the top, lots of swearing, wishing he had smaller fingers, scratching from glass fibre rash! Not sure exactly how long it took but it must be the best part of an hour to get everything apart and back together again!

May be worth paying a garage to do it if you cant get it in the air yourself!

Having tried it from above on the 390 which has an easier console to strip, I found it was just as easy to do it from underneath

You may need a long extension and a universal joint, but hey, what you do in the bedroom is your concern.

If it's the same sort of design as the SE then I don't think taking the dash out will help much.

On mine if you undo the ashtray and small recessed panel, take the gear knob off , I can then remove the leather gear lever gaitor to get to the rubber gaitor. Remove the rubber gaitor and then you can see the remote housing from the top.

However when I tightned the bolts up on the 350 I went underneath by reversing on car ramps and jacking front end up and placing axle stands. This then let me crawl under car to reach bolts and bushes on my car creeper.

Have you got a part number for Rimmer s ?

From a previous posting on the subject, hope it helps

I got mine from Rimmers nearly a year ago Part Number UKC854Poly.

If no joy Ive got a feeling I have 4 left, as I didnt fit the front ones as they were a nightmare to get at and the rubber ones were okay as there is a lot less strain on them!

I have to clear the garage out at the weekend so I could have a look then!

Just had a look at Superflex website and TR7/8 gear box remote housing replaced by part number spf0355- www.superflex.co.uk/SuperFlex_Triu

Yes Islander has the right part number for Rimmers. 8 required in total. They only had 4 rubber ones left though. My dash is the all in one jobbie (dash and tunnel).

Your correct a total of 8 are required in total. However, the ones at the front are usually in fairly good nick, which is a good excuse as I couldn't work out a way of getting at them!!!!

The ones at the back are where the problem occurs, due to a poor design. I do have 4 poly ones left over, but I am sure Rimmers get them from Superflex, have you tried them?

Sorry my mistake. I meant to say they have plenty of poly ones but only 4 rubber type.

I changed the bushes from underneath though I had access to a proper lift when I did it. It was a bit tight on space for the front bushes, the bolts took an age to remove and put back as they could only be turned a small amount at a time and there was no space for a ratchet. I would think you could do it on axle stands though it will not be very comfortable.

Wear some eye protection or you will be constantly stopping to dig muck out of your eyes. This also may be obvious but putting two wheels on ramps then jacking to put axle stands under the other end could be a bit dangerous, four stands would probably be safer.
