Afternoon one and all. With such a lovely day, had the Chimeara
out enjoying some roof off motoring. However,a small problem has occured.
when slowing down at junctions intermitantly the car will cut out.
noted worse when brakes are applied and steering is being turned,
revs just come down, runs lumpty for a moment and then dies.the car
re-starts streight away.

Work done recently has been, full service (plugs ect) stepper motor
remove & clean (inc housing) throttle housing clean, engine breather
pipes cleaned out, idle speed re-set (as per the bible) and ecu reset.

Any ideas were to go next..? Some one has said possable throttle
potentiometer....? all inlet hoses & vacume pipes look in great condition
so dont think its a air leak.
has anyone else had this trouble....?

Thanks

not sure this will help much, but I had occasional stalling at roundabouts and a complete stall when plodding along a dual carriageway.

With advice from GreenV8S, I claened the AFM connectors, relays and fuel pump wiring, and (touch head) it's not missed a beat in 2,000 miles. Could just have been some cr@p fuel or anything really, but just might have cleaned something relevant.

Must be a westmids / worcs thing - mine has been doing the same the last couple of weeks. It's going in to Horizon tomorrow for Mike to have a look at it, will let you know if he finds anything.

Had something similar today - every now and then the revs dropped to about 500 and she was struggling to tick over - quick blip on the throttle and she picked up again for a while...then did it again.

Of course this was while sitting in a 5 mile stop go traffic jam on the M40 in 36 deg heat. I was nicely roasted by the time i got out of it !

Temp guage was pegged just a fraction below 90 the whole time, fans running full on so I expect the underbonnet temp was something close the the surface of the sun. So Im putting it down to fuel vaporising in the pipes - a few seconds of 3000 rpm was enough to settle her down for a while each time. Used to get this on my old Renault 5 turbo and it felt very similar.

Mine did this as well, exactly the same, then it went in for a service and came out ok. So no idea what it was, but something they did in the 6,000 service did the trick. Have been told it may be the distributor cap being dirty?? Or something like that - I'm no engineer...

Had similar situation with mine, now fixed, I hope.

Rough running at high revs and intermittently cutting out/stalling:
My local mechanic advised it could be the 'plug extensions' (aka Plug Shroud Adaptor) fitted between the end of the HT lead and the spark plug, these have finite life and do breakdown. I bought 8 new ones problem solved (did cost me 120 quid though, from TVR specialist David Gerard in Inkberrow, near Alcester (West Midlands). My local mechanic said these were also fitted to old Vauxhalls so with a bit of digging around you might get them cheaper elsewhere.

If it starts straight away with no fuss it could be the speedo sensor on the diff. They send a pulse to the ECU and to the speedo (splits halfway). Mine did this. The ECU think oh, 3000rpm, 50mph here's some fuel. You come to a stop and the ECU doesn't realise and the mixture is all wrong and the car cuts out. Turning the ignition resets everything and its fine again.

BTW, my speedo worked fine at the time.

Clink!! (penny dropping)

Mine has just started doing this, it's worse the more sudden the deceleration. If I coast slowly to a stop it's ok.

By coincidence the speedo packed up recently and on checking I found the gap between the sensor and toothed wheel to be mahoosive, much greater than the prescribed 9 thou.

Hopefully all will be cured when I get under it tomorrow and reset the gap.

Yep! Although sometimes it died without any warning and at speed. Replaced the usual culprits to no avail. Now keep it on a maintenance battery charger* (new battery) and *touchwood* not so much as a hiccup. Been running smoothly for a few hundred miles.

(* It's worth pointing out my Tiv is a weekend toy and, as such, isn't used on a regular basis. However, the problem first occurred as it was driven away from the dealer's.)

Yep, mine does the same and last weekend it got the fault code (68) that corresponds to the road speed sensor. Strangely the code has disappeared, but the car still stalls every now ans then. Might clean the sensor and see what happens

Same type of thing - it as the lambda sensors. Also didn't like stopping and then into reverse when it often died as well.
If you very lightly touch the accelerator at junctions and hold it at about 1000rpm does it keep ticking.
They are not that cheap to replace so may be worth trying to get a fault code or borrow a couple to try first.
