They over pay you (eg £5000 and original value) you are supposed to send the extra back to them in cash!
What then happens is you have handed over the car, £5000 in cash to their agent and then you find the the original cheque has had all the funds withdrawn from your bank account for being a forgery.
You are then left without the car and have given someone £5000 to take your car away.
Simple, isn't it.
I'd arrange to meet their agent in a dark lonely place with a few of your mates. Don't give any contact details to them either.
Forged bankers draft.

I know its a scam and DIDN'T intend to do anything about it but my main point is, when the bank says the cheque/bankers draft has cleared how can anything go wrong. If the cheque is forged/stolen, then surely it would be the bank at fault for saying it has cleared before it actually had. At least thats how I understand it.
Have had loads of these in the past and have always wondered how it worked

Read it and weep. Bankers drafts aren't worth the paper they are written on.

This is not laundering, it is theft. The money you place in escrow or receive in banker's drafts will not become yours. Any change you pay or goods you give up will be forfeit.
Laundering is e.g. somone asking for a "consultant" to represent their company in your country, you make payments on orders etc.. ie they are cleaning the money via your bank account.

Davidra, this is just as much laundering as what you mention.
It is a method of obtaining 'clean' money.

How can it be clean money, it is money resulting from a fraud, the moment that happens the money is surely fraudulent funds hence not in any way clean. In this case none of their money has ever or will ever come to you it will only appear to have done for a short period, yet yours has gone to them as part of the theft. Same as if someone nicked £100 quid out of your wallet, that's not laundering, it's theft.
Assuming they're not planning to over-pay several times the car's value why would they want to actually buy a car? They'd only have to sell it again. 5K STG isn't a lot to clean, usually you'd be wanting to place a minimum of 10K here and there.
Hence I don't think any money will actually be paid for the car, thereby ruling out laundering. Could find out by progressing the deal until a banker's draft or some other payment method that is open to abuse is offered. But don't attempt to catch or meet in person the perpetrators, and don't give them personal details (beyond those they already have).

Addendum: Since they're planning to send u a cheque and therefore will need your bank details, adding the other personal info it sounds like it could be a phishing exercise ie leading towards identity theft. Definitely do not reveal any details, as they'd pretty much have enough to raid your bank account and clean you out.

It's not money laundering because there's no money going in to be laundered.
By analagy, they're stealing clothes from Tesco's instead of giving 5 suits to the dry cleaners and only collecting 3 of them.

The law of the scam, sccording to Tigger: -
"If it smells like, walks like, talks like and looks like a scam, treat it like one."
And this looks like a scam.
It's all about the funds never truly clearing in your account, so although they appear to have, the issueing or receving bank will decide that the cheque isn't genuine and cancel it. If by this time you've paid out thousands of pounds to some child of a Nigerian minister who needs to snaffle his wad [ffffnnnnaaar] out of the country, then you're stuffed.

The last batch were from the Anglo Ashanti Mining Corporation, not even very good forgeries, a pal of mine took his to the bank and was told that it probably wouldn't get through the counter proccess but if it did the funds would be reclaimed at a later date, long after the overpayment had been recovered by the scammers.
I didn't bother trying to bank mine, just e-mailed the guy told him that Anglo Ashanti cheques were well known to be fraudulent in the UK and don't try and take the pi$$ again as I don't like it. He came back to me with a very indignant reply asking how I could possibly insult his clients in this way and could I bank the cheque ASAP and resolve the matter. Told him we'd best leave it there rather than have me return his cheque personally!
Mining Co. was African, Cyprus connection somewhere and I'm sure the cheque was posted in Bournemouth.
It's not laundering just plain old, common as muck, middle of the road theft.

That's not right is it?if I pay for something by cheque I don't need the payee's details.
I stand corrected. By my understanding of the FSA lectures I have been on, pretty much anything resulting in paying a third party and reclaiming the money back was classed as laundering. You don't always have to get the full vaule back then. The car is part of the laudering process and once sold on the proceedes are 'clean'

Forged ones certainly aren't. Bankers drafts are cleared funds and should be fine. The fraud is predicated on the fact that personal cheques can be repudiated & the funds backed out after they have been paid in.
this scam has nothing to do with money laundering, the bankers drafts are fake, but the bank will take it, credit your account then days or weeks later realise its a fake and take the money back. You have paid the guy the extra and lost your car.
Or as in other threads here, the draft is only for the value of the car, but is still fake, and you just lose the car.
Nothing to do with laundering, where you are trying to make dodgy money clean, here there is no dodgy money to start with.
Its a con, end of.
