Guys, I’m at a bit of a loss with this one..

A friend of mine has been having some hassle with her internet connection / phone line over the last couple of nights.

This is basically what she said;

” Jo tried calling the house last night, but got an engaged tone, even though no one was on the phone. So we picked up the phone and there was no dial tone, we then un-plugged the modem cable and the dial tone appeared.

I then tried going back online and an error message saying “cable un-plugged” came up, even though the cable was plugged in. We tried calling BT etc, but kept getting cut off…”

Apparently this only happens when the modem is plugged in and when the phone receiver is picked up, there is no dial tone until the modem is un-plugged.

Excuse my ignorance here, but is that the little box which plugs into the phone socket, and into which you plug the connection cable into?

It separates the boradband signals from your telephone signals (that are sharing the same wire). Therefore if it fails, using the BB ties up the entire line and callers get an engaged tone.

Yes.

Which is what he said, but in fewer words.
