apparently Nikon have a history of bringing something out when they know Canon have something bid linedf up... something to do with trying to keep brand loyalty.
Yes but they happily moved from F through to F6 over several decades without bodging up the size of film it would take!

So a D70 with a D200 sensor and it takes only SD cards?
Not even a useful consideration as a second body then.
Move along then, there's nothing to see here!

And did you see the 1/250 flash sync? So, once again, Nikon is putting out a new DSLR body that still isn't better than the D70. Unless it has shutter lock-up.
But still... why can't Nikon make a camera with 1/500 flash sync, 10MP+ sensor, CF usage, mirror lock-up, larger viewfinder, and 5fps burst? And how about making that a full-size sensor? People would gladly pay for the $2000-$2500 it would run, and Nikon would finally have a camera that would be hands-down better than what Canon has to offer in that price range.
I'd go with all your suggestions, add a normal ( "old fashioned" ) cable release and a battery/grip/vertical shuuter release and subtract the full size sensor. I actually think the smaller sensor is one of the few better features of Nikon and some Canons - it solves a few of the potential problems of getting photons into the wells at the angles away from the centre and makes possible more efficient lens design as wwll as making edge issues of existing lens a thing of the past.

don't get me started!!!!

The only problem with smaller sensors (aside from a little noise) is that it encourages the DX lenses... thus eliminating the advantage smaller sensors provide with older lenses?

You have just described the d200 - with the exception of 1/500th flash speed, but let's be honest is it really such a big deal? I know Ken Rockwell w*nks on about it, but even the D2X and 1dsMkII manage with 1/250th.
Not sure why the flash synch and SD cards mean that this camera isn't better than the D70 - it's just a less appealing upgrade if you already have a D70. So get a D200 instead!
I personally don't own any DX lenses, but I don't care about sensor size. I only care about noise, something which Nikon seem incapable of getting remotely close to canon on.
