Just phoned the nice men from BBWF about getting my windscreen done and they said they had just done a 280i in brighton too.
Whos car is this and are you based in Brighton. Would be good to meet up whilst the weather lasts?
Regards Mike

Good to see they're getting some trade from BBWF.
Dare I ask, is everybody satisfied with the screens fitted on the day?
I think they had a few problems with my FHC, which was not so straight forward as the DHC windows. Much better than before though, and good value for money. If I ever get my car concours (very unlikely) then the surround might need redoing. I think because the gap around the glass is 10mm, I might need to do something clever with some strip of Polyethylene, as opposed to smoothing with a finger - which works better with a 5mm gap.
Still Happy though. -Jim

It's commendable that you have replaced your own screen but judging by the general consensus at BBWF, it's not something that many people would be willing to tackle on their own. Frankly for the rates that we have offered through this forum, I would doubt that even the most impecunious Wedger would contemplate undertaking this task.
The urethanes that are available through bodyshop suppliers will generally not be the latest technology and huge advances have been made in this area in the last couple of years. The top replacement companies are now using one of two single part urethane giving a one hour drive away time for vehicles, even with twin airbags, at temperatures down to 5 degees C; these urethanes are also high modulus and non conductive and therefore suitable for 99% of vehicles, something that you can't say about the average tube of Sikaflex from a bodyshop supplier.
As many people saw at BBWF, just because the screen fits the aperture, it doesn't mean that it's going to last. Many of the screens that needed replacement through delamination were not of Pilkington manufacture. I only saw one Pilkington screen that had not aged well.
Please don't misunderstand me GV, I am not knocking what you have done. I just don't think there are many Wedgers that would be willing to do the same as you have!
p.s. Looking for a job?

Well, I used sikaflex and the screen has bonded very well into its frame. Admittedly it wasn't easy but I managed to get the job done using the right spec glue for the job Sika flex 255. By the time I cleaned off the excess glue and subsequent silcone sealent to ensure a water tight seal I was satisfied with the job. Once the trim is in place arounf the screen it will be perfect.
The driving factor for DIY was cost. There are too many people fleecing TVR owners for jobs that can be done if you're passionate about your car. I got quoted £750 to supply and fit a new screen by a well known firm, by the time I researched what needed doing it cost me £230 all in. Would have been less if i paid the excess if insured but the car is laid up undergoing its restoration. Next job is the retrim!

I do many things to my cars from swapping engines & running gear, reshelling to recent paintjobs, but I agree with Phill that I would rather leave a bonded windscreen in a professionals hand.
I'd only end up with a cracked screen and glue all over the place, but congrats on fitting yourself.

I hate to tell you GV but we waived insurance excess payments at BBWF and for one paying customer charged just £140 inc VAT on the day. Normally we would ask for £200 to supply and fit excluding VAT from non insured Wedgers.
gutted that I forgot my docs on the day, but 50 quid for the job was well worth it.
Phil your guy did say he could come back to sort out the bad finish around one of the corners. The silicon "dragged" due to the heat. Also there is a couple of lumps around the screen, nothing drastic, but I am a perfectionist. I feel a bit bad about calling someone over just to tidy up something due to me being fussy. Would it be easier for me to run it into the depo.?

That's a good price Phil but I couldn't get my car up to BBWF all the same. Still, I got the satisfaction of doing it myself and still saved money that was relative to my situation which is what counts eh?

I will get Richard to ring you on Monday to sort out whatever it is that you are not satisfied with.
Phil.

Aaah well, no such problems on my job lol! However, I intend to put some rubber trim around the frame which the factory used to hide the glue as well as providing a water proof seal.
